Defunct NBA Teams: Every Franchise That No Longer Exists

The majority of the teams on this page disappeared during the unstable early years of major professional basketball. Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Toronto lasted only through the BAA's inaugural 1946-47 season. Providence followed in 1949, while Chicago and St. Louis disappeared after the first official NBA season in 1949-50.

Washington survived into the 1950-51 season, Indianapolis lasted until 1953, and Baltimore continued until the 1954-55 season before ceasing operations. Baltimore remains especially notable because the Bullets had won the 1948 BAA championship, making them the only former BAA/NBA champion to later fold.

Not every team on the list disappeared immediately after leaving the NBA. Anderson, Sheboygan and Waterloo all moved into the National Professional Basketball League after their NBA participation ended. The original Denver Nuggets also left the NBA following the 1949-50 season.

These departures were part of the NBA's dramatic contraction after the 1949 merger of the BAA and NBL. The newly combined league initially included a mixture of large-market franchises and smaller Midwestern teams, but that structure proved difficult to sustain.

The Seattle SuperSonics are different from most of the teams on this page. Seattle did not simply cease operations. The franchise relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 and began playing as the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The SuperSonics are included because the Seattle name, colors and historical identity disappeared from active NBA competition when the team moved. That makes Seattle an important historical franchise identity even though the underlying franchise continued in another city.

Professional basketball during the 1940s and early 1950s was far less stable than the modern NBA. Teams often operated with limited financial resources, played in smaller arenas and relied heavily on local attendance rather than large national broadcasting contracts.

Travel also created major problems. The merger of the BAA and NBL brought together major-market teams in cities such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia with franchises located in much smaller Midwestern communities. The cost of operating a national schedule could be difficult for smaller clubs to absorb.

The Anderson Packers are a good example of those pressures. NBAHoopsOnline's Anderson history notes that the team played in four different leagues during its short existence and that financial problems made it difficult to meet the NBA's requirements. The Packers ultimately left the NBA after one season.

The NBA rapidly contracted after its first season under the NBA name. That period eliminated many of the smaller and financially weaker franchises and helped produce a more stable league centered increasingly around larger markets.

Modern NBA franchises operate in a completely different economic environment. National television revenue, sponsorships, merchandising, franchise values and league-wide revenue systems provide financial stability that early professional basketball teams did not possess.

As a result, relocation has become far more likely than outright dissolution. Baltimore's collapse in the 1950s remains the last example of an NBA franchise simply ceasing operations during league play.
