The Bombers, along with the Chicago Stags, were one of the few big markets to fail. The problem for the Bombers is that the city itself had a lot of issues and culturally was more aligned with the south than the Northeast. This caused a lot of players to not want to play there.
Failed in Saint Louie:
The Bombers are not the only team to fail in St. Louis. In 1955, just 4 years after the Bombers failed, the Milwaukee Hawks relocated to St. Louis. The Hawks were probably the most successful of any St. Louis team winning one NBA title while in the city, but they too ultimately moved in 1968 after 13 seasons in the city. The ABA also tried to play in St. Louis, moving the Carolina Cougars there in 1974. The Spirits of St. Louis lasted 2 seasons before they moved to Salt Lake City as the ABA disbanded and ended up with one of the sweetheart deals of all-time to disband.
