1974 NBA All-Star Game - West 134, East 123

The 24th NBA All-Star Game was played on January 15, 1974, at Seattle Center Coliseum in Seattle, Washington. Before a crowd of 14,360, the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 134-123. The victory reversed the result of the previous year's game, when the East held the West to just 84 points.

Detroit Pistons center Bob Lanier earned All-Star Game Most Valuable Player honors after scoring a game-high 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in only 26 minutes. Lanier made 11 of his 15 field goal attempts and helped the Western Conference establish an early advantage that it maintained throughout the contest.

Playing in front of his home crowd, Seattle SuperSonics forward Spencer Haywood delivered another outstanding performance for the West. Haywood finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots while playing a game-high 33 minutes for his conference.

The Western Conference took control early, outscoring the East 39-29 in the first quarter and 27-18 in the second. That gave the West a commanding 66-47 halftime lead. The East responded by scoring 38 points in each of the final two quarters, but the Western Conference held on for an 11-point victory.

The Eastern Conference was led by New York Knicks forward Dave DeBusschere, who scored 16 points. Atlanta Hawks guard Pete Maravich added 15, while Boston Celtics guard Jo Jo White contributed 13. Capital Bullets forward Elvin Hayes collected a game-high 15 rebounds and added 12 points and six assists.

The game featured many of the NBA's biggest stars, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Rick Barry, John Havlicek, Walt Frazier, Dave Cowens, Gail Goodrich and Bob McAdoo. Jerry West was selected to the Western Conference roster but did not participate because of an injury.

Bob Lanier was nearly unstoppable offensively, scoring 24 points on 11-for-15 shooting while adding 10 rebounds and two assists. The Detroit Pistons center made the most of his 26 minutes on the court and became the first Pistons player to win NBA All-Star Game MVP honors. His performance helped the West recover from its disappointing loss in the 1973 contest.

Spencer Haywood Shines in Seattle

Seattle SuperSonics forward Spencer Haywood put on a show for the hometown crowd, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Haywood played 33 minutes, more than any other Western Conference player, and provided an important complement to Lanier's scoring inside.

The Western Conference's Dominant First Half

The Western Conference scored 39 points in the opening quarter and held the Eastern Conference to only 18 points in the second. The West entered halftime leading 66-47 and extended the margin to 101-85 after three quarters. Although the East scored 38 points in each of the final two periods, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Elvin Hayes Dominates the Glass

Elvin Hayes of the Capital Bullets led all players with 15 rebounds. Hayes also contributed 12 points and six assists in 35 minutes, the most playing time of anyone in the game. The Capital Bullets name was used for the franchise during the 1973-74 NBA season before the team became the Washington Bullets.

Jerry West Misses the Game

Los Angeles Lakers star Jerry West was selected for the Western Conference but could not play because of an injury. Phoenix Suns guard Charlie Scott took his place on the roster. West, who had won the 1972 All-Star Game MVP award, was nearing the end of his playing career and would retire after the 1973-74 NBA season.

The 1974 contest brought the NBA's annual showcase to Seattle Center Coliseum, home of the Seattle SuperSonics.
