2022 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 71st NBA All-Star Game took place on February 20, 2022, at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio. Team LeBron defeated Team Durant 163-160 in a game highlighted by Stephen Curry's extraordinary three-point shooting performance, LeBron James' game-winning jumper and a halftime celebration of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.
Curry, representing the Golden State Warriors, scored 50 points and established an NBA All-Star Game record with 16 three-pointers. He made 17 of 30 field goal attempts, including 16 of 27 shots from beyond the arc, and earned the first All-Star Game MVP award of his career.
The game marked the fifth consecutive All-Star Game using the captain-selected roster format introduced in 2018. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant served as captains for the second consecutive year, although Durant was unable to play because of a knee injury.
James selected a roster featuring Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, DeMar DeRozan and several other stars. Durant's roster included Joel Embiid, Ja Morant, Jayson Tatum, Trae Young and Andrew Wiggins. The teams also featured several first-time All-Stars, including hometown Cleveland Cavaliers representatives Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen.
Team LeBron opened the game with a 47-45 first-quarter advantage. Curry scored 18 points during the second quarter, making six three-pointers in the period, but Team Durant won the quarter 49-46 and took a 94-93 lead into halftime.
The halftime ceremony was one of the most memorable events of the NBA's 75th anniversary celebration. Members of the league's 75th Anniversary Team gathered at center court as fans honored legends from multiple generations of professional basketball. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Julius Erving and many other former stars participated in the festivities.
James and Curry were among the current players honored during the ceremony. Both were born in Akron, Ohio, and their return to northeastern Ohio added another layer of significance to the evening. James had spent 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers and led the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2016.
After halftime, Curry continued his remarkable shooting display. He scored 21 points and made seven three-pointers during the third quarter. His shooting repeatedly brought the crowd to its feet as he launched shots from well beyond the three-point line.
The teams tied the third quarter 45-45, giving Team Durant a 139-138 cumulative lead entering the fourth. Under the All-Star Game's special scoring format, 24 points were added to the leading team's total, establishing a target score of 163.
The fourth quarter was played without a game clock. Both teams increased their defensive intensity as they approached the target score, producing a much closer finish than the game's high-scoring opening periods might have suggested.
Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid led Team Durant with 36 points and 10 rebounds. He made 14 of 20 field goal attempts and five three-pointers, giving Team Durant a consistent offensive presence throughout the game.
Antetokounmpo contributed 30 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for Team LeBron. James finished with 24 points, six rebounds and eight assists, while Garland scored 13 points in his first All-Star appearance. Jokic added 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
With the game tied at 155, Cleveland center Jarrett Allen blocked an Embiid shot near the basket, providing a memorable defensive highlight for the hometown fans. The two teams continued exchanging baskets until Team LeBron moved within two points of the target score.
James ended the game with a turnaround fadeaway jumper over Zach LaVine, giving Team LeBron its 163rd point and the victory. The basket came in the same city where James began his NBA career as the first overall selection in the 2003 NBA Draft.
Curry's 50-point performance was just two points short of Anthony Davis' then-record 52-point All-Star Game performance from 2017. Curry's 16 made three-pointers shattered the previous single-game All-Star record of nine, which had been shared by Paul George in 2016 and Damian Lillard in 2021.
Team Durant received additional scoring from Devin Booker, who scored 20 points, LaMelo Ball with 18 and Dejounte Murray with 17. Trae Young recorded 13 points and 10 assists, while Ja Morant produced several spectacular dunks in his first All-Star appearance.
The game also included a number of injury-related absences. Durant missed the game because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Draymond Green was unavailable because of a back injury, while James Harden missed the event because of a hamstring injury. Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell was unable to play because of an upper respiratory illness.
Team LeBron's victory improved James' record as an All-Star captain to 5-0. The game is remembered for Curry's historic shooting performance, James' dramatic winning basket, the return of the All-Star Game to Cleveland and the celebration of 75 years of NBA history.
