2024 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 73rd NBA All-Star Game was played on February 18, 2024, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference 211-186 in the highest-scoring NBA All-Star Game ever played at the time. The East became the first team in All-Star history to score 200 points, while the two teams combined for an unprecedented 397 points.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard won the Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award after scoring 39 points and making 11 three-pointers. His shooting performance helped the Eastern Conference establish an All-Star Game record with 42 made three-pointers.
The 2024 game marked the return of the traditional Eastern Conference versus Western Conference format. From 2018 through 2023, the NBA had used captain-selected teams, with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant among the players who served as captains. The league restored the conference rivalry and the traditional four-quarter game clock for the Indianapolis event.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James were the leading vote-getters in their respective conferences and served as honorary team captains. Antetokounmpo started for the East alongside Lillard, Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum and Bam Adebayo. James started for the West with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic and Kevin Durant.
Indianapolis hosted the NBA All-Star Game for the second time. The city's previous game took place in 1985 at the Hoosier Dome, where the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 140-129 and Ralph Sampson won MVP honors. The 2024 event brought the league's showcase back to a city with a long basketball tradition.
The Eastern Conference immediately established a fast pace, scoring 53 points in the opening quarter and taking a 53-47 lead. Haliburton, playing on his home court, made five consecutive three-pointers during a spectacular opening stretch and quickly energized the Indianapolis crowd.
The East continued its offensive dominance in the second quarter, outscoring the West 51-42 to build a 104-89 halftime lead. Lillard and Haliburton repeatedly connected from long distance, while Jaylen Brown provided additional scoring off the bench.
The Eastern Conference added 56 points in the third quarter, extending its advantage to 160-136. The West struggled to contain the East's outside shooting, with Lillard, Haliburton and Brown combining for an extraordinary number of three-pointers.
With the outcome largely decided, the final quarter became a showcase for Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns scored 34 of his 50 points in the fourth quarter, producing one of the most remarkable individual scoring periods in All-Star history.
Towns finished with 50 points on 23-for-35 shooting, including four three-pointers. His performance was the third 50-point game in NBA All-Star history, following Anthony Davis' 52 points in 2017, Stephen Curry's 50 in 2022 and Jayson Tatum's 55 in 2023. Towns became the fourth player to reach the 50-point mark.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 points for the Western Conference, making seven three-pointers in his first All-Star start. Durant scored 18 points, while Stephen Curry contributed 16 and Devin Booker added 15.
The Eastern Conference had several outstanding offensive performances. Lillard led the team with 39 points, Brown scored 36, Haliburton finished with 32, Antetokounmpo contributed 23 and Tatum added 20.
Haliburton made 10 of 14 three-point attempts, finishing with 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Brown scored 36 points on 15-for-23 shooting, including six three-pointers, while Antetokounmpo made 11 of 16 field goal attempts.
The East finished with 83 made field goals on 146 attempts, shooting 56.8 percent from the floor. Its 42 three-pointers came on 97 attempts, an unprecedented display of long-range shooting in the All-Star Game.
The West made 80 of 143 field goal attempts and scored 186 points, a total that would have been enough to win almost every previous NBA All-Star Game. However, the East's offensive production was even greater, resulting in a 25-point victory.
The game also featured several first-time All-Stars, including Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Maxey, Paolo Banchero and Scottie Barnes for the Eastern Conference. Barnes and Trae Young joined the roster as injury replacements for Joel Embiid and Julius Randle.
The Western Conference featured many established stars, including James, Durant, Curry, Jokic, Doncic, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Booker. James appeared in his 20th NBA All-Star Game, extending his record for career selections.
The 2024 NBA All-Star Game is remembered for its extraordinary offensive records, Lillard's MVP performance, Haliburton's hometown shooting display, Towns' 50-point game and the return of the traditional conference format.
