2019 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 68th NBA All-Star Game was played on February 17, 2019, at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Team LeBron defeated Team Giannis 178-164, overcoming a 20-point second-half deficit. Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant won the second All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award of his career after leading Team LeBron with 31 points.
The game was the second to use the captain-selected roster format introduced in 2018. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James was selected as a captain for the second consecutive year, while Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo served as captain for the first time. The captains selected their rosters from a pool of players representing both the Eastern and Western Conferences.
Antetokounmpo made an immediate impact, scoring 16 points in the first quarter and helping Team Giannis build a 53-37 lead. Team Giannis made 23 field goals in the opening period, establishing an All-Star Game first-quarter record at the time. The team's 53 first-quarter points also tied the record for points scored in a quarter.
One of the game's most spectacular plays came when Stephen Curry bounced an alley-oop pass high off the court, allowing Antetokounmpo to rise above the rim for a powerful dunk. The unusual assist drew an enthusiastic reaction from players on both benches.
Team LeBron responded in the second quarter, but Team Giannis maintained an 95-82 advantage at halftime. Antetokounmpo continued to attack the basket, while Paul George, Khris Middleton and Russell Westbrook provided additional scoring.
Team Giannis extended its lead to 20 points during the third quarter before Team LeBron began its comeback. Durant, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard and Damian Lillard helped spark a barrage of three-pointers that erased the deficit and eventually put Team LeBron ahead.
Team LeBron outscored Team Giannis 50-36 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 131-132 entering the fourth. The momentum continued in the final period, with Team LeBron winning the quarter 47-32 to complete the 178-164 victory.
Durant scored 31 points and made six three-pointers to earn his second All-Star MVP award, following his first in 2012. Thompson contributed 20 points, while James and Leonard each scored 19. Damian Lillard added 18 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns scored 11.
For Team Giannis, Antetokounmpo led all scorers with 38 points on 17-for-23 shooting. George and Middleton each scored 20 points, while Curry and Westbrook finished with 17 apiece.
The 2019 game also featured emotional farewell appearances by two future Hall of Famers. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made special roster additions for Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, recognizing their outstanding careers as both players approached retirement.
Nowitzki entered the game late in the first quarter and made three consecutive three-pointers, finishing with nine points in approximately four minutes. Wade scored seven points and shared memorable alley-oop plays with longtime friend and former Miami teammate LeBron James.
During the third quarter, Wade and Nowitzki were honored at center court with commemorative jerseys. The tribute recognized two players who helped define an era of NBA basketball and had combined for four NBA championships and numerous All-Star appearances.
Charlotte hosted the All-Star Game for the second time, having previously hosted in 1991. The 2019 event also marked the return of the All-Star Game to North Carolina after the NBA relocated the originally scheduled 2017 game because of the state's House Bill 2 controversy.
The 2019 NBA All-Star Game is remembered for Team LeBron's 20-point comeback, Durant's second MVP award, Antetokounmpo's 38-point performance, and the farewell celebration for Wade and Nowitzki.
