2023 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 72nd NBA All-Star Game was played on February 19, 2023, at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Team Giannis defeated Team LeBron 184-175 in a high-scoring contest highlighted by Jayson Tatum's record-breaking 55-point performance. The Boston Celtics forward earned the Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award and established a new scoring record for the annual exhibition.
The game marked the first time the NBA conducted its All-Star player draft live in the arena immediately before tipoff. Team captains LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks selected their teammates in front of the crowd, creating an unusual atmosphere just minutes before the opening tip.
Antetokounmpo selected a roster featuring Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Ja Morant and Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen. James assembled a team that included Joel Embiid, Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic and Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown.
The draft included several entertaining moments, particularly when Antetokounmpo attempted to select Morant before the starter selections had begun. Morant was eventually selected for Team Giannis, joining Tatum, Mitchell and Markkanen in the starting lineup.
Salt Lake City was hosting the NBA All-Star Game for the second time. The city's previous All-Star Game took place in 1993 at the Delta Center, when Karl Malone and John Stockton shared MVP honors. Thirty years later, the Utah Jazz were represented by Markkanen, who made his first All-Star appearance in front of the hometown crowd.
Team Giannis and Team LeBron finished the opening quarter tied at 46. Antetokounmpo, who had been dealing with a wrist injury, scored the game's opening basket on a dunk before immediately leaving the contest. He played only 20 seconds but remained on the bench to support his team.
James scored 13 points in the first half but did not return after halftime because of a hand injury sustained during the game. His absence removed both captains from the second half, leaving their teammates to decide the outcome.
Team Giannis won the second quarter 53-46, taking a 99-92 lead into halftime. Tatum, Mitchell and Damian Lillard helped maintain the advantage with a combination of drives, transition baskets and long-range shooting.
Tatum delivered his most remarkable performance in the third quarter. He scored 27 points in the period, establishing an All-Star Game record for points in a single quarter. His shooting display included several difficult three-pointers and helped Team Giannis outscore Team LeBron 59-49.
The 59-point third quarter gave Team Giannis a 158-141 advantage entering the fourth. Under the target-score format, 24 points were added to the leading team's total, establishing a target of 182 points.
The fourth quarter was played without a game clock. Team LeBron mounted a late rally, led by Brown, Embiid and Irving, but Team Giannis maintained its advantage. Lillard eventually ended the contest with a deep three-pointer, pushing Team Giannis past the target score for a 184-175 victory.
Tatum finished with 55 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He made 22 of 31 field goal attempts, including 10 three-pointers, and scored 27 points in the third quarter alone. His 55 points surpassed the previous All-Star Game record of 52, set by Anthony Davis in 2017.
Mitchell, playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, contributed 40 points and 10 assists for Team Giannis. He made eight three-pointers and provided a second major scoring threat alongside Tatum.
Lillard scored 26 points and made eight three-pointers, including the game-winning shot. Markkanen contributed 13 points and seven rebounds in his first All-Star appearance, while Tyrese Haliburton added 18 points for Team LeBron in his All-Star debut.
For Team LeBron, Brown scored 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. He also shared several entertaining possessions with Celtics teammate Tatum, who was playing for the opposing team. Embiid and Irving each scored 32 points, with Irving adding a game-high 15 assists.
Several prominent players missed the game because of injuries. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Zion Williamson were unavailable, leading to changes in the starting lineups and additional All-Star selections. Anthony Edwards, De'Aaron Fox and Pascal Siakam were among the players added to the roster.
The 2023 NBA All-Star Game also represented the final edition of the captain-selected team format used from 2018 through 2023. The league returned to the traditional Eastern Conference versus Western Conference matchup in 2024.
Team Giannis' victory ended Team LeBron's five-game winning streak under the captain format. The game is remembered for Tatum's historic 55-point performance, Mitchell's 40-point contribution, the first live All-Star Draft and Salt Lake City's celebration of NBA history.
