2020 NBA All-Star Game Recap

The 69th NBA All-Star Game took place on February 16, 2020, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Team LeBron defeated Team Giannis 157-155 before 17,808 spectators in one of the most competitive finishes in modern All-Star Game history. Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard scored 30 points and became the first recipient of the newly renamed Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award.

The 2020 game carried special significance following the deaths of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash on January 26. The NBA honored their memories throughout All-Star Weekend, including a pregame tribute and special uniform numbers. Team LeBron wore No. 2 in recognition of Gianna Bryant, while Team Giannis wore No. 24 in honor of Kobe Bryant.

The league also introduced a new format designed to increase competition. Each of the first three quarters was treated as a separate contest for charity. The scores were reset for each quarter's charitable competition, although the cumulative points continued to determine the game score.

After three quarters, the game clock would be removed and a target score established by adding 24 points to the leading team's cumulative total. The number 24 was chosen to honor Bryant's final Lakers jersey number. The first team to reach the target score would win.

Team LeBron started quickly, scoring 53 points in the opening quarter and taking a 53-41 lead. The 53 points tied an NBA All-Star Game record for points in a quarter. Leonard, LeBron James and Anthony Davis helped set the early pace.

Team Giannis responded in the second quarter with a 51-30 advantage, taking a 92-83 halftime lead. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young punctuated the period by making a half-court shot at the buzzer.

The third quarter became an unusually intense contest because the teams were competing for another charitable donation. Nikola Jokic made a late three-pointer for Team LeBron, but Rudy Gobert answered with a dunk off a Trae Young assist to tie the quarter at 41-41. Neither team won the third-quarter prize outright, so the money carried over into the final period.

Team Giannis entered the fourth quarter ahead 133-124. Under the new format, 24 points were added to the leading score, establishing a target of 157. The game clock was turned off, but the shot clock remained in effect.

The fourth quarter featured defensive pressure rarely seen in previous All-Star exhibitions. Players took charges, contested shots and argued calls as both teams approached the target score. Team LeBron gradually erased its nine-point deficit.

Late in the game, Antetokounmpo blocked a LeBron James layup attempt that officials initially ruled goaltending. After a review, the basket was overturned. James Harden subsequently made a three-pointer that would have ended the game, but the shot was disallowed because Kyle Lowry drew an offensive foul.

James eventually scored a dunk to put Team LeBron ahead 156-153. Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid made two free throws for Team Giannis, narrowing the score to 156-155 and setting up a winner-take-all possession.

Chicago native Anthony Davis was fouled while attempting to score. He missed his first free throw but made the second, giving Team LeBron the 157-155 victory. It was a dramatic conclusion to the first All-Star Game decided by a target score rather than a game clock.

Leonard earned MVP honors after making 11 of 18 field goal attempts, including eight three-pointers in 14 attempts. He also recorded seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. His eight three-pointers tied the All-Star Game record at the time.

James and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Chris Paul each scored 23 points for Team LeBron. Davis added 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Paul also provided one of the game's most memorable highlights with an alley-oop dunk from Russell Westbrook.

For Team Giannis, Antetokounmpo led the way with 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Boston Celtics guard Kemba Walker scored 23 points, while Embiid contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds. Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert scored 21 points and supplied several important baskets near the rim.

The game also featured All-Star debuts by players including Luka Doncic, Trae Young, Pascal Siakam, Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Brandon Ingram, Bam Adebayo and Domantas Sabonis.

The charitable element provided additional meaning to the result. Team LeBron represented Chicago Scholars, while Team Giannis played for After School Matters. The teams' quarter-by-quarter performances determined the distribution of charitable donations.

The 2020 NBA All-Star Game is remembered for its Kobe Bryant tributes, the introduction of the untimed fourth quarter, Leonard's MVP performance and the competitive finish decided by Davis' free throw.
