2017 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 66th NBA All-Star Game was played on February 19, 2017, at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 192-182 before an announced crowd of 15,701. New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis gave the hometown crowd an unforgettable performance, scoring an NBA All-Star Game record 52 points to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
Davis made 26 of his 39 field goal attempts and grabbed 10 rebounds. His 52 points broke Wilt Chamberlain's 55-year-old All-Star scoring record of 42, established in 1962. Davis also established an All-Star record with 26 made field goals. The performance made him the first player to score 50 points in an NBA All-Star Game.
The game was an offensive showcase from the opening tip. The Eastern Conference scored 53 points in the first quarter and led 53-48 after 12 minutes. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, making his first All-Star appearance, repeatedly finished above the rim and eventually led the East with 30 points on 14-for-17 shooting.
The Western Conference responded in the second quarter, outscoring the East 49-39 to take a 97-92 halftime lead. Davis, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant helped the West produce a steady stream of dunks, three-pointers and fast-break opportunities.
The third quarter was evenly matched, with each conference scoring 47 points. The West entered the fourth quarter ahead 144-139 and closed out the victory by outscoring the East 48-43 in the final period.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook scored 41 points off the bench, making 16 of 26 field goal attempts and seven three-pointers. Westbrook, the MVP of the 2015 and 2016 All-Star Games, added seven assists and five rebounds.
Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He became the fourth player to record a triple-double in an NBA All-Star Game, joining Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.
Durant's appearance alongside Westbrook attracted particular attention. The two had been teammates with the Oklahoma City Thunder until Durant joined the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2016. During the game, Durant assisted on a Westbrook dunk, producing one of the evening's most memorable moments.
Houston Rockets guard James Harden finished with 12 points and 12 assists, while Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry scored 21 points and made five three-pointers. Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol added 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
For the Eastern Conference, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points in his first All-Star Game. Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James contributed 23 points, while teammate Kyrie Irving recorded 22 points and a game-high 14 assists.
Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas scored 20 points, and Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lowry added 19. DeMar DeRozan, also of Toronto, contributed 16 points and six assists.
Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward made his first NBA All-Star appearance, scoring eight points and collecting four steals. Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan also made his first appearance, contributing six points for the West.
The Eastern Conference roster included an injury replacement. Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love was unable to participate because of a knee injury, and New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was selected to replace him. Anthony scored 10 points.
The game was originally scheduled to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, but the NBA moved the event to New Orleans in 2016 following controversy surrounding North Carolina's House Bill 2. New Orleans had previously hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 2008 and 2014.
The teams combined for 374 points, surpassing the previous combined All-Star scoring record of 369 established in 2016. The 2017 game was also the last to use the traditional Eastern Conference versus Western Conference format before the NBA introduced a captain-selected team format in 2018.
The 2017 NBA All-Star Game is remembered primarily for Davis' record-breaking 52-point performance, Westbrook's 41 points, Durant's triple-double, Antetokounmpo's impressive debut and the final edition of the traditional East-West matchup before the format change.
