Hakeem Olajuwon
29 PTS • 18 REB • 9 AST • 5 STL • 11 BLK
40 minutes • Houston Rockets 129, Golden State Warriors 109
On March 3, 1990, Hakeem Olajuwon produced one of the most complete
individual games in NBA history as the Houston Rockets defeated the
Golden State Warriors 129-109 in Houston.
Olajuwon finished with 29 points, 18 rebounds, 9 assists,
5 steals and 11 blocked shots in 40 minutes. He shot
13-for-25 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
The performance easily qualified as a 5x5, meaning
Olajuwon recorded at least five in all five major statistical
categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
He also came within a single assist of a quadruple-double. Olajuwon
would officially record a quadruple-double later that same month,
against the Milwaukee Bucks on March 29, 1990.

One Assist Short of a Quadruple-Double
The most remarkable part of Olajuwon's performance was how close
he came to recording a quadruple-double. With 29 points, 18 rebounds
and 11 blocks already secured, Olajuwon needed only one more assist
to reach double figures in a fourth statistical category.
The correct official total is 9 assists. Some
historical reproductions of this box score have listed Olajuwon
with 10 assists, which would have made the performance a
quadruple-double. The official statistical record credits him with
nine.
That distinction is especially important because Olajuwon would not
have to wait long for an official quadruple-double. Just 26 days
later, on March 29, 1990, he accomplished the feat against the
Milwaukee Bucks.
A Dominant Defensive Performance
Olajuwon's 11 blocked shots and five steals meant that he personally
accounted for 16 steals and blocks. Houston as a team finished with
17 steals and 13 blocked shots.
His impact went far beyond defense. Olajuwon led Houston with
29 points and 18 rebounds while finishing one assist short of
double figures.
Houston also received 21 points and 11 assists from Sleepy Floyd.
Buck Johnson, Otis Thorpe, Mitchell Wiggins and Vernon Maxwell all
scored at least 15 points as the Rockets reached 129.
About the 5x5
A 5x5 is achieved when a player records at least five points,
five rebounds, five assists, five steals and five blocked shots
in the same game.
Olajuwon's March 3, 1990 performance went far beyond the minimum.
He exceeded the 5x5 threshold with 29 points, 18 rebounds,
9 assists, 5 steals and 11 blocks.
Few players in NBA history have combined elite scoring, rebounding,
passing, shot blocking and ball-hawking in a single game at this
level. Olajuwon's ability to produce 11 blocks while also collecting
five steals makes this one of the most unusual defensive stat lines
in league history.
