regular-season game and ends with its first loss.
Franchise history follows continuous franchise lineage through
relocations and name changes. Oklahoma City's record therefore
includes the Seattle SuperSonics era, while other relocated
franchises retain records established under their previous names.
The Washington Capitols are retained as a separate historical
entry because the original NBAHoopsOnline record included the
defunct BAA franchise and its remarkable 15-0 start in 1948-49.

Franchises That Have Never Started 5-0
Three current NBA franchises have never opened a season with five
consecutive victories.
Brooklyn Nets: The franchise record is 4-0,
set by the 2002-03 New Jersey Nets.
Orlando Magic: Orlando's best start is 4-0,
set during the 2020-21 season.
Charlotte Hornets: Charlotte has the shortest
franchise-best undefeated start among current NBA teams at 3-0,
set in 2021-22.
Historical Notes and Records
Golden State Warriors:
Golden State's 24-0 opening in 2015-16 is not merely the Warriors'
franchise record; it is the longest undefeated start in NBA history.
The Warriors eventually finished 73-9 but lost to Cleveland in the
NBA Finals.
Cleveland Cavaliers:
Cleveland established a new franchise record in 2024-25 by winning
its first 15 games. The previous Cavaliers record had been an 8-0
start in 1976-77.
Houston Rockets:
Houston began the 1993-94 season 15-0 and went on to win the first
NBA championship in franchise history. The Rockets are one of the
few teams whose franchise-record undefeated opening ended with a
championship.
Washington Capitols:
The Capitols opened the 1948-49 BAA season 15-0. The defunct
franchise is retained separately on this page because its start
remains one of the greatest in professional basketball history.
Oklahoma City Thunder / Seattle SuperSonics:
The franchise record remains the 12-0 start established by the
1982-83 Seattle SuperSonics. Oklahoma City began both the 2024-25
and 2025-26 seasons 7-0, and reached 8-0 in 2025-26, but that did
not surpass Seattle's franchise record.
San Antonio Spurs:
San Antonio established a new franchise record in 2025-26 by
starting 5-0. Before that season, the Spurs had never opened an
NBA season with five consecutive victories.
Detroit Pistons:
Detroit owns one of the strangest records on the page. The
1970-71 Pistons started 9-0 but finished only 45-37 and missed
the playoffs. It remains the best undefeated start by an NBA team
that ultimately failed to reach the postseason.
Orlando Magic:
The 2020-21 Magic started 4-0 before finishing only 21-51.
That is the fewest final-season victories by any team represented
on this list.
Toronto Raptors:
Toronto's 6-0 start in 2018-19 remains the best in franchise
history. The Raptors eventually defeated Golden State in the NBA
Finals to win their first championship.
Miami Heat:
Miami's 5-0 start in 2011-12 is relatively modest compared with
many teams on this page, but the Heat ultimately won the NBA
championship that season.
