2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenge Recap
The 2012 NBA Rising Stars Challenge was played on February 24, 2012, at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, during NBA All-Star Weekend. Team Chuck defeated Team Shaq 146-133 in the first edition of the event to feature mixed rosters of rookies and second-year NBA players.
The NBA introduced the new format after years of matching first-year players against sophomores. TNT analysts and former NBA stars Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal served as general managers, selecting teams from a pool of young NBA talent. Barkley's team was known as Team Chuck, while O'Neal's team competed as Team Shaq.
Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Kyrie Irving delivered the game's most memorable performance, scoring 34 points and recording nine assists to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Irving made 12 of his 13 field-goal attempts, including all eight of his three-point attempts, and converted both free throws. He also contributed three rebounds and two steals.
Irving's perfect eight-for-eight shooting from three-point range was an extraordinary display of accuracy. The first overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft repeatedly punished Team Shaq from beyond the arc and demonstrated the offensive skills that would eventually make him one of the NBA's most accomplished ballhandlers and scorers.
Indiana Pacers forward Paul George provided major support for Team Chuck, scoring 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting. George added two rebounds, two assists and two steals. His athletic finishes helped set the tone for an exhibition filled with dunks, alley-oops and transition opportunities.
Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including three offensive boards. Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner added 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, giving Team Chuck another strong all-around performance.
Washington Wizards guard John Wall scored 17 points and distributed eight assists. Wall had earned MVP honors in the 2011 Rookie Challenge after setting an event record with 22 assists, and his playmaking continued to be an important part of the young-player showcase.
Utah Jazz teammates Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors each scored 14 points. Hayward added three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots, while Favors made all five of his field-goal attempts and all four free throws. Favors was added to the roster after San Antonio Spurs center Tiago Splitter was ruled out because of an injury.
New Jersey Nets guard MarShon Brooks contributed eight points, while Minnesota Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams scored two. San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard was also selected for Team Chuck but did not play because of a calf injury.
Team Shaq received 20 points from Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson, who made 10 of his 11 field-goal attempts. Detroit Pistons center Greg Monroe scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded five steals, providing one of the game's strongest all-around performances.
Miami Heat guard Norris Cole added 18 points, connecting on four three-pointers. New York Knicks guard Landry Fields contributed 16 points and four rebounds, while Detroit guard Brandon Knight scored 14 points and handed out seven assists.
Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio finished with 12 points and seven assists. Rubio displayed the passing creativity that made him one of the most entertaining young guards in the league, frequently creating opportunities for teammates in transition.
Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris scored 12 points, making five of seven shots, including two three-pointers. Charlotte Bobcats guard Kemba Walker contributed 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high 10 assists.
Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin scored 10 points in just over 10 minutes, making five of six shots. Griffin was also selected for the main NBA All-Star Game, limiting his playing time in the Rising Stars exhibition.
New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin was one of the event's biggest attractions following his sudden rise to national prominence during the February 2012 phenomenon known as "Linsanity." Lin played just under nine minutes and scored two points, adding one rebound and one assist.
Team Chuck established a 77-65 halftime advantage behind Irving's hot shooting and an aggressive offensive attack. Team Shaq remained competitive in the second half, but Team Chuck outscored its opponent 69-68 after the break to secure the 13-point victory.
The game featured 279 combined points and demonstrated the NBA's new approach to showcasing emerging stars. Rather than dividing players strictly by NBA experience, the drafted-team format allowed different combinations of young players to compete alongside one another.
The 2012 Rising Stars Challenge was also an early showcase for several players who would become NBA All-Stars, including Irving, George, Wall, Cousins, Griffin, Kemba Walker, Gordon Hayward and Kawhi Leonard. Irving's perfect three-point shooting remains the defining highlight of the contest.
