2011 NBA Rookie Challenge Recap

The 2011 NBA Rookie Challenge was played on February 18, 2011, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, as part of NBA All-Star Weekend. The Rookies defeated the Sophomores 148-140 in a high-scoring exhibition that featured a record-setting passing performance by Washington Wizards point guard John Wall.

Wall earned Most Valuable Player honors after scoring 12 points and recording 22 assists, establishing a Rookie Challenge record. The first overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft also collected two rebounds and two steals. His ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates helped the Rookies shoot an impressive 64.0 percent from the field.

Wall's 22 assists were the defining statistic of the evening. Rather than dominating the game as a scorer, the Washington rookie consistently pushed the pace, delivered accurate passes in transition and created easy baskets for his teammates. The performance demonstrated the court vision that would become one of his greatest strengths during his NBA career.

Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins led all players with 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Cousins made 15 of his 24 field-goal attempts and collected six offensive rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot. His powerful performance around the basket complemented Wall's passing.

Wall and Cousins had been teammates at the University of Kentucky during the 2009-10 college basketball season. Their reunion in the Rookie Challenge gave fans another opportunity to watch the two former Wildcats work together on a national stage.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Wesley Johnson contributed 25 points, making 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and three of five three-pointers. Johnson's scoring provided an important boost off the bench.

San Antonio Spurs guard Gary Neal scored 20 points on nine-of-15 shooting, including two three-pointers. New York Knicks guard Landry Fields added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists while making six of eight field-goal attempts.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin scored 14 points in just under 14 minutes, connecting on seven of his 10 shots. Griffin also collected three rebounds and blocked one shot. Although he had been drafted first overall in 2009, he qualified as a rookie because he missed the entire 2009-10 season with a knee injury.

Griffin's appearance was one of several highlights of a remarkable All-Star Weekend. He also competed in the main NBA All-Star Game and won the Slam Dunk Contest, memorably completing a dunk over the hood of a car.

Detroit Pistons center Greg Monroe finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, making five of six field-goal attempts. New Jersey Nets forward Derrick Favors scored nine points, while Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe contributed six points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Sophomores were led by Oklahoma City Thunder guard James Harden, who scored 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Harden made four three-pointers and four free throws, providing the second-year team with a strong offensive performance.

San Antonio Spurs forward DeJuan Blair nearly matched Harden's scoring output, finishing with 28 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Blair made 14 of 21 field-goal attempts, collected seven offensive rebounds and blocked two shots. His performance followed his record-setting 23-rebound effort in the 2010 Rookie Challenge.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews scored 15 points and distributed six assists. Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan added 14 points, four assists and three steals, while Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka contributed 14 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry scored 13 points, making three three-pointers, and led the Sophomores with eight assists. Curry also collected six rebounds.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Jrue Holiday finished with 10 points and four assists. Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson and Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings scored eight points apiece, with Jennings contributing seven assists.

The Rookies led 71-69 at halftime after an entertaining opening 20 minutes. The second-year players remained competitive throughout the second half, but the Rookies outscored them 77-71 after the break to secure the eight-point victory.

The Rookies made 64 of 100 field-goal attempts, shooting 64.0 percent, and recorded 40 assists. The Sophomores shot 54.6 percent from the field, making 59 of 108 attempts, and recorded 34 assists.

The victory marked the second consecutive win for the Rookies after their 140-128 triumph in 2010. It also concluded the traditional Rookie-versus-Sophomore era of the event. Beginning in 2012, the NBA adopted a new format featuring mixed teams of first- and second-year players selected through a draft.

The 2011 Rookie Challenge featured an impressive collection of young talent, including future NBA All-Stars John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Blake Griffin, Stephen Curry, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan and Jrue Holiday. The game remains especially memorable for Wall's 22-assist record and Cousins' 33-point performance.
