2013 NBA Rising Stars Challenge Recap
The 2013 NBA Rising Stars Challenge took place on February 15, 2013, at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, during NBA All-Star Weekend. Team Chuck defeated Team Shaq 163-135 in the second year of the event's drafted-team format, with former NBA stars Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal once again selecting mixed rosters of rookies and sophomores.
Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried delivered the game's standout performance, scoring 40 points and collecting 10 rebounds to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Faried made 18 of his 22 field-goal attempts, connected on his only three-point attempt and converted all three free throws. His seven offensive rebounds highlighted an energetic performance around the basket.
Known for his relentless effort and athleticism, Faried repeatedly finished fast breaks, converted putbacks and attacked the rim. His 40 points established a new scoring record for the Rising Stars/Rookie Challenge event, surpassing the previous mark of 36 points set by Amar'e Stoudemire in 2004.
Faried was not Team Chuck's only major contributor. San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard scored 20 points, made three three-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson added 20 points and 10 rebounds, shooting nine-for-10 from the field.
Sacramento Kings guard Isaiah Thomas scored 18 points and distributed 10 assists. Thomas made four three-pointers and finished with a team-best plus-30 rating. His passing helped Team Chuck generate easy baskets throughout the contest.
Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds. Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Alexey Shved contributed 12 points apiece, while New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
Detroit Pistons guard Brandon Knight scored 10 points and recorded six assists. Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio added five points and 10 assists, giving Team Chuck another outstanding passer alongside Thomas.
Team Chuck finished with 42 assists on 69 made field goals. The team shot 63.9 percent overall and 53.1 percent from three-point range, connecting on 17 of 32 attempts. Its 163 points were the highest total by a team in the event's history at that time.
Team Shaq was led by Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, the MVP of the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge. Irving scored 32 points on 14-of-20 shooting, including four three-pointers, and added six rebounds and six assists.
Irving's scoring provided one of the game's individual highlights, but Team Shaq struggled to match Team Chuck's combination of interior scoring, rebounding and perimeter accuracy.
Another Cleveland guard, Dion Waiters, scored 23 points while making 11 of his 12 field-goal attempts. Waiters' efficient performance demonstrated the scoring ability that made him one of the more intriguing rookies in the 2012 draft class.
Portland Trail Blazers rookie Damian Lillard contributed 18 points and five assists. Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons scored 13 points in front of the hometown crowd, while Golden State Warriors forward Harrison Barnes added 12 points.
Golden State guard Klay Thompson scored 11 points. Charlotte Bobcats guard Kemba Walker finished with eight points and eight assists, while teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist contributed eight points and four rebounds.
Cleveland center Tyler Zeller scored four points and collected four rebounds. Orlando forward Andrew Nicholson, who replaced the injured Andre Drummond, contributed six points and three rebounds. Drummond appeared for only 36 seconds before leaving the game.
Team Chuck dominated the opening half, building a 90-66 advantage. Faried's scoring and the team's accurate perimeter shooting created a substantial lead before halftime.
Team Chuck outscored Team Shaq 73-69 in the second half, extending its margin to 28 points by the final buzzer. The contest featured 298 combined points and showcased the offensive freedom that had become a defining characteristic of the Rising Stars exhibition.
The 2013 game brought together several future NBA All-Stars and major award winners, including Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Bradley Beal, Isaiah Thomas, Kemba Walker and Nikola Vucevic.
Faried's 40-point performance, Team Chuck's 163-point total and the team's 42 assists made the 2013 Rising Stars Challenge one of the most statistically memorable editions of the event.
