All-Star Game MVP: Kobe Bryant
2011 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 60th NBA All-Star Game took place on February 20, 2011, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 148-143 before 17,163 spectators. Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant delivered a memorable performance in his home arena, scoring 37 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to win his fourth NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award.
Bryant's fourth MVP honor tied Bob Pettit's record for the most NBA All-Star Game MVP awards at the time. Bryant previously won the award in 2002, 2007 and 2009, sharing the 2009 honor with former Lakers teammate Shaquille O'Neal. His performance in 2011 was particularly impressive because 10 of his 14 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
The Western Conference established control early, scoring 37 points in the opening quarter and building a 76-64 halftime advantage. Bryant scored 21 of his 37 points during the first half, helping the West maintain its lead in front of the Los Angeles crowd.
Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant was nearly as productive as Bryant, finishing with 34 points. Durant made 11 of 23 field goal attempts, including four three-pointers, and converted all eight of his free throws. His scoring helped the West build a 117-100 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Eastern Conference mounted a remarkable comeback in the final period, outscoring the West 43-31. Miami Heat forward LeBron James led the charge, finishing with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. James became only the second player in NBA All-Star Game history to record a triple-double, joining Michael Jordan, who accomplished the feat in 1997.
New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire matched James with 29 points for the Eastern Conference. Stoudemire shot 11-for-20 from the field and made all six of his free throws, adding six rebounds.
With 1:12 remaining, the East had cut the deficit to 142-140. However, Lakers forward Pau Gasol tipped in a missed Bryant shot with 53 seconds left, providing an important basket that helped the West withstand the comeback.
Gasol finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. His six offensive rebounds complemented Bryant's 10 as the Western Conference collected 27 offensive rebounds and 61 total player rebounds.
New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul scored 10 points, handed out seven assists and recorded a game-high five steals. San Antonio Spurs guard Manu GinĂ³bili contributed seven points and five assists, while Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams recorded five points and seven assists.
Two Oklahoma City Thunder players represented the Western Conference. In addition to Durant's 34 points, Russell Westbrook scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in his first All-Star appearance. Los Angeles Clippers rookie Blake Griffin also made his All-Star Game debut, contributing eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love was selected as an injury replacement for Houston Rockets center Yao Ming. Love scored two points and grabbed four rebounds in his first All-Star Game appearance.
For the Eastern Conference, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade added 14 points, while fellow Miami teammate Chris Bosh scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. James, Wade and Bosh were all playing their first season together with the Heat after joining forces during the summer of 2010.
Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo recorded eight assists. Ray Allen scored 12 points, and Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks added 11 points, including three three-pointers.
The West shot 46.8 percent from the field, making 59 of 126 attempts. The East shot a more efficient 51.4 percent, making 57 of 111 attempts, but the West's advantage in offensive rebounding and second-chance opportunities helped determine the outcome.
The 2011 game is remembered for Bryant's fourth MVP award, James' historic triple-double and the Eastern Conference's dramatic fourth-quarter rally that fell just short.
