2007 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 56th NBA All-Star Game took place on February 18, 2007, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 153-132 before an announced crowd of 15,694. Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant won his second All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award after scoring 31 points, grabbing five rebounds, handing out six assists and recording six steals.
The 2007 contest was historic because it marked the first time the NBA held its All-Star Game in a city without an NBA franchise. The Thomas & Mack Center, located on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus, provided a unique setting for the league's annual showcase.
Bryant established himself as the game's leading performer early, scoring 17 of his 31 points in the first half. He finished 13-for-24 from the field, including three three-pointers, while helping the Western Conference dominate the opening three quarters.
The West opened with a 39-31 first-quarter advantage and followed with a 40-28 second period. By halftime, the Western Conference held a commanding 79-59 lead.
The West scored another 40 points in the third quarter, stretching its advantage to 119-88. Although the Eastern Conference outscored the West 44-34 in the fourth, the result was never seriously threatened.
Phoenix Suns center Amar'e Stoudemire nearly challenged Bryant for MVP honors. Stoudemire scored 29 points on 14-for-22 shooting, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots. His 14 made field goals were the most by any player in the game.
Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony contributed 20 points and nine rebounds, making 10 of his 15 field goal attempts. Anthony was added to the roster as an injury replacement for Houston Rockets center Yao Ming.
Another Phoenix Suns player, Shawn Marion, scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Marion also recorded four assists and two steals, providing the Western Conference with another efficient offensive performance.
Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen scored 12 points, making four three-pointers. Allen was selected as an injury replacement for Denver Nuggets guard Allen Iverson, who had been voted a Western Conference starter but was unable to play.
Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady scored eight points but made an important contribution as a playmaker. McGrady finished with 11 assists, the most by any player in the game.
San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker added eight points and 10 assists, giving the West another productive distributor. The combined playmaking of McGrady and Parker helped the Western Conference finish with 52 assists.
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while teammate Josh Howard contributed three points, four rebounds and three assists. Howard was making his only NBA All-Star appearance after replacing the injured Carlos Boozer.
Utah Jazz center Mehmet Okur also made his only NBA All-Star appearance. Okur was added to the Western Conference roster as an injury replacement for Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash. He scored four points on two-for-two shooting, grabbed two rebounds and recorded one assist.
Okur's selection was particularly notable for Utah. He became the first Turkish-born player to participate in an NBA All-Star Game and represented a Jazz team that was emerging as one of the stronger clubs in the Western Conference.
San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four assists. Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett added seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
The Eastern Conference was led by Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, who scored 28 points on 11-for-20 shooting. James also grabbed six rebounds and handed out six assists, continuing his rise as one of the league's leading stars.
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard made his first NBA All-Star appearance and delivered an impressive performance. Howard scored 20 points on 10-for-14 shooting and led all players with 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.
Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson scored 12 points in his first All-Star appearance. Johnson had been selected to replace injured New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd.
Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Miami Heat center Shaquille O'Neal contributed 10 points, six rebounds and one blocked shot.
Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade scored 10 points and matched Bryant with six steals. Wade also handed out three assists, while Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas scored eight points and recorded four assists.
Detroit Pistons guards Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton each scored eight points. Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal also finished with eight, while New Jersey Nets forward Vince Carter contributed seven.
Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler scored two points in his first NBA All-Star appearance. Butler joined Arenas as Washington's representatives on the Eastern Conference roster.
The Western Conference shot 54.8 percent from the field, making 69 of 126 attempts. The Eastern Conference made 59 of 121 shots for 48.8 percent.
The West's ball movement was especially effective. Its 52 assists exceeded the East's 29 and helped produce 153 points, one of the highest totals in All-Star Game history at the time.
Although the East outscored the West 90-84 in the paint, the Western Conference had a considerable advantage from three-point range. The West made 10 three-pointers, compared with eight for the East.
Bryant's MVP award was the second of his career, following his first in 2002. He would go on to win the award again in 2009, when he shared it with Shaquille O'Neal, and in 2011.
The 2007 game remains memorable for its Las Vegas setting, Bryant's six-steal performance, Stoudemire's efficient scoring and the presence of several first-time All-Stars, including Dwight Howard, Joe Johnson, Josh Howard and Mehmet Okur.
