2010 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 59th NBA All-Star Game was held on February 14, 2010, at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference 141-139 in front of an announced crowd of 108,713, establishing a record for attendance at a basketball game. Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
The event was unlike any previous NBA All-Star Game. Instead of playing in a traditional basketball arena, the NBA transformed the massive home of the Dallas Cowboys into a basketball venue. The court was installed on the stadium floor beneath the building's enormous center-hung video screen, while spectators filled the lower seating sections and upper decks.
The attendance figure of 108,713 surpassed the previous verified basketball attendance record of 78,129, established during a 2003 college basketball game between Kentucky and Michigan State at Ford Field in Detroit. The 2010 All-Star Game also shattered the previous NBA All-Star attendance record of 44,735, set at the Houston Astrodome in 1989.
Wade delivered an outstanding all-around performance, scoring 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting while adding 11 assists, six rebounds and five steals. He was particularly effective attacking the basket, helping the Eastern Conference score 88 points in the paint.
The game was competitive throughout. The East led 37-34 after the first quarter and increased its advantage to 76-69 at halftime. Both teams continued scoring at a remarkable pace in the third quarter, when the East outscored the West 42-40 to take a 118-109 lead into the final period.
The Western Conference mounted a comeback during the fourth quarter. Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony led the West with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while hometown Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki added 22 points.
With the outcome still undecided in the final seconds, Wade converted two free throws to put the East ahead 139-137. Nowitzki answered with two free throws to tie the game at 139.
Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh then drew a foul and made two free throws with approximately five seconds remaining, giving the Eastern Conference a 141-139 lead. Anthony attempted a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, but his shot missed.
Bosh finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, providing one of the game's strongest performances off the bench. He made nine of 16 field goal attempts and five of seven free throws.
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James scored 25 points, grabbed five rebounds, recorded six assists and collected four steals. James and Wade combined for 53 points, giving the Eastern Conference a formidable offensive partnership.
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard scored 17 points and blocked three shots. Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson contributed 10 points, while Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose added eight points and four assists in his first All-Star Game appearance.
Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo also made his All-Star debut, contributing four points and five assists. Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace became the first player to represent the Bobcats in an NBA All-Star Game, scoring two points and grabbing three rebounds.
Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford made his first All-Star appearance and contributed eight points and four rebounds. New York Knicks forward David Lee, another first-time All-Star, scored four points and grabbed two rebounds.
For the Western Conference, Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash delivered an exceptional passing performance, finishing with a game-high 13 assists in less than 20 minutes. Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams scored 14 points, handed out six assists and recorded four steals in his first NBA All-Star appearance.
Denver Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups scored 17 points, making five of eight three-point attempts. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant added 15 points in his first All-Star Game, marking an important milestone in the development of the young Thunder franchise.
Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph scored eight points and collected six rebounds in his first All-Star appearance.
Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman was selected as an injury replacement and scored four points in his only NBA All-Star appearance. New York Knicks forward David Lee and Kaman were among several players added to the game because of injuries to previously selected All-Stars.
Three prominent Western Conference players were unavailable because of injuries: Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and Brandon Roy. Allen Iverson had been voted an Eastern Conference starter but also did not participate.
The Eastern Conference made 60 of 104 field goal attempts, shooting 57.7 percent. The Western Conference made 59 of 115 attempts, shooting 51.3 percent. Both teams combined for 280 points.
The 2010 game remains one of the most historically significant NBA All-Star Games because of its extraordinary attendance, its unusual stadium setting and Wade's MVP performance in a two-point victory.
