History of the San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful and respected franchises in NBA history. Originally founded as the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967, the franchise relocated to San Antonio in 1973 and became the Spurs. Since joining the NBA during the 1976 ABA-NBA merger, San Antonio has won five NBA championships, produced numerous Hall of Fame players, and established a culture of excellence built on teamwork, player development, and consistency. Led over the years by legends such as George Gervin, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginóbili, and Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs became one of the NBA's model organizations.

From Dallas to San Antonio

The franchise began as one of the ABA's original teams in 1967 under the name Dallas Chaparrals.

Although the Chaparrals fielded competitive teams featuring Cliff Hagan, Ron Boone, and Glen Combs, poor attendance threatened the club's future.

Following the 1972–73 season, the franchise was leased to a group of San Antonio businessmen led by Angelo Drossos, Red McCombs, and John Schaefer.

The team relocated to San Antonio and adopted the name Spurs, inspired by the city's western heritage.

The move proved to be an immediate success as fans embraced professional basketball, ensuring the franchise remained in San Antonio permanently.

Joining the NBA

When the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976, the Spurs were one of four teams admitted into the league.

San Antonio quickly became one of the NBA's better teams behind superstar guard George Gervin, known as "The Iceman."

Gervin won four NBA scoring titles while dazzling fans with his effortless scoring ability.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Spurs became regular playoff participants but were unable to reach the NBA Finals.

The David Robinson Era

The franchise's fortunes changed dramatically after selecting David Robinson with the first overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft.

Because Robinson fulfilled his commitment to the United States Navy, he did not join the Spurs until 1989.

His arrival immediately transformed the franchise.

Robinson won the 1990 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and quickly developed into one of the NBA's premier centers.

Throughout the 1990s he earned:

  • 1995 NBA Most Valuable Player
  • 1992 NBA Defensive Player of the Year
  • Multiple All-NBA selections
  • Numerous All-Star appearances

Despite Robinson's brilliance, playoff success remained elusive.

Drafting Tim Duncan

An injury-plagued 1996–97 season allowed the Spurs to win the NBA Draft Lottery.

With the first overall pick in 1997, San Antonio selected Tim Duncan from Wake Forest.

The pairing of Duncan and Robinson became known as the "Twin Towers."

Under newly hired head coach Gregg Popovich, the Spurs immediately became championship contenders.

The First NBA Championship

During the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, San Antonio posted the NBA's best record.

Led by:

  • Tim Duncan
  • David Robinson
  • Avery Johnson
  • Sean Elliott
  • Mario Elie

The Spurs defeated the New York Knicks in the 1999 NBA Finals to capture the franchise's first NBA championship.

Tim Duncan earned the first of his three NBA Finals MVP Awards.

Building a Dynasty

As Robinson neared retirement, San Antonio built around Duncan while adding two future Hall of Fame guards:

  • Tony Parker
  • Manu Ginóbili

Together with Gregg Popovich, the trio became one of the NBA's greatest dynasties.

2003 Championship

The Spurs defeated the New Jersey Nets to win their second NBA championship.

Tim Duncan delivered one of the greatest Finals performances ever, earning Finals MVP.

David Robinson retired following the championship.

2005 Championship

Behind Duncan, Parker, Ginóbili, and Bruce Bowen, San Antonio defeated the Detroit Pistons in a thrilling seven-game NBA Finals.

2007 Championship

The Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers for their fourth NBA title.

Tony Parker became the first European-born player to win NBA Finals MVP.

The Beautiful Game

Although the Spurs remained contenders for years, many believe the 2013–14 team represented the franchise at its peak.

After losing the heartbreaking 2013 NBA Finals to the Miami Heat in seven games—following Ray Allen's famous Game 6 three-pointer—the Spurs returned with renewed determination.

The 2014 Spurs showcased extraordinary passing, spacing, and teamwork.

Led by:

  • Tim Duncan
  • Tony Parker
  • Manu Ginóbili
  • Kawhi Leonard
  • Boris Diaw
  • Danny Green

San Antonio defeated the Miami Heat in five games to capture its fifth NBA championship.

Kawhi Leonard won NBA Finals MVP.

Many analysts consider the 2014 Spurs one of the greatest examples of team basketball in NBA history.

Transition to a New Era

Following Tim Duncan's retirement in 2016, the Spurs continued competing behind Kawhi Leonard.

However, injuries and contract disputes eventually led Leonard to request a trade.

He was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2018.

San Antonio remained competitive with players including:

  • DeMar DeRozan
  • LaMarcus Aldridge

The franchise eventually shifted toward rebuilding.

The Victor Wembanyama Era

The Spurs won the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery and selected Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick.

Widely considered one of basketball's greatest prospects, Wembanyama immediately demonstrated elite scoring, defense, and playmaking ability.

Combined with an improving young core, San Antonio believes Wembanyama can lead the franchise back into championship contention.
