United States Basketball League History

The United States Basketball League, commonly known as the USBL, was founded in 1985 as a professional men's basketball league designed primarily to operate during the spring and early summer.

The league became known as the "League of Opportunity" because it gave players, coaches and executives another avenue to continue their professional careers. Many USBL players later reached the NBA or played professionally overseas.

Unlike the NBA's traditional fall-to-spring schedule, the USBL played primarily from late spring into early summer. That schedule allowed players who had completed college seasons or other professional seasons to continue playing while attempting to attract attention from NBA teams and other leagues.

The USBL's first season was played in 1985. The Springfield Fame finished 19-6 and were declared the league champions because there were no playoffs.

The league suspended operations in 1989 but returned in 1990. It continued operating through the 2007 season before suspending play again for 2008.

The USBL developed a reputation as a proving ground for players who were trying to reach or return to the NBA. More than 150 players from the league eventually appeared in the NBA, while many others continued their careers in the Continental Basketball Association, overseas leagues and other professional circuits.

The league also featured a number of recognizable coaches and former NBA players. Coaches associated with the USBL included John Lucas, Darryl Dawkins, Robert Parish, Cliff Levingston, Eric Musselman and Kevin Mackey.

Because teams frequently relocated, changed names or folded, the USBL became one of the more complicated minor-league basketball circuits to track historically. Some franchises played under several different names during their existence.

The Atlantic City Seagulls, Miami Tropics and Dodge City Legend each won three championships during the original era, the most by any USBL franchises.

After nearly two decades without a season, the United States Basketball League returned to the court in 2026. The revived league retained the historic USBL name and its long-standing emphasis on providing professional opportunities for players.

The league's revived season began in March 2026. Seattle eventually advanced to the championship game and defeated the Salem Capitals 132-105 on June 7, 2026 to become the first champion of the new USBL era.

The championship gave Seattle the first USBL title awarded since the Kansas Cagerz won the final championship of the original league in 2007.

The USBL was unusual among American professional basketball leagues because it intentionally operated during the spring and summer rather than directly competing with the NBA schedule.

The league also became known for frequent franchise movement and name changes. One of the most extreme examples was the organization that played at different times as the Jacksonville Hooters, Daytona Beach Hooters, Jacksonville Shooters, Jacksonville Barracudas, Gulf Coast SunDogs, Lakeland Blue Ducks and Brevard Blue Ducks.

The Atlantic City Seagulls became the first USBL team to win three consecutive championships, capturing titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Miami won championships in 1987, 1992 and 1993, while Dodge City won in 2000, 2003 and 2005.
