2024 NBA Rising Stars Challenge Recap

The 2024 NBA Rising Stars Challenge was held February 16, 2024, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the third consecutive season, the NBA used a four-team tournament featuring two semifinals and a championship. Team Jalen, coached by former NBA player Jalen Rose, captured the title with a 26-13 victory over Team Detlef.

Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 22 points across two games. Mathurin delivered his most impressive performance in the opening semifinal, scoring 18 points as Team Jalen defeated Team Tamika 40-35. Playing in his home arena, Mathurin made seven of 13 field-goal attempts and two three-pointers.

The first semifinal began with Team Tamika scoring the first nine points. Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren opened the scoring with a dunk, and his team quickly established a 9-0 advantage. Team Jalen responded with a 15-2 run, however, and eventually took control of the contest.

Mathurin scored 18 points, while New Orleans Pelicans rookie Jordan Hawkins contributed seven points and five rebounds. Dallas Mavericks rookie Dereck Lively II scored six points without missing a field-goal attempt, and Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren added five points and three rebounds.

Portland Trail Blazers rookie Scoot Henderson led Team Tamika with 10 points. Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey added eight points and four steals, while Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero and Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray scored five points apiece.

With Team Jalen needing one basket to win, Mathurin missed two free throws that could have ended the contest. He recovered by making a pull-up jumper over Henderson, giving Team Jalen the 40-35 victory.

The second semifinal produced a surprise. Team Detlef, composed of NBA G League players and coached by former NBA forward Detlef Schrempf, defeated Team Pau 41-36 despite facing a roster featuring Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller and Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Team Detlef opened the game with an 11-0 run and built a lead of as many as 12 points. Team Pau rallied and cut the deficit to one, but Team Detlef held on. G League Ignite forward Matas Buzelis made the game-winning turnaround jumper over Miller to secure the 41-36 victory.

Mac McClung led Team Detlef with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Wembanyama led Team Pau with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace added eight points for Team Pau.

The championship was dominated by Team Jalen. Although Team Detlef briefly led 4-2, Team Jalen responded with a 10-point run and controlled the remainder of the game. Lively scored six points, while Jalen Williams and Hawkins contributed five apiece.

Team Jalen reached 23 points when Hawkins made a three-pointer. Williams then made another three-pointer to end the contest, giving Team Jalen a 26-13 championship victory. Because the tournament used a target score of 25 points, the winning three-pointer carried Team Jalen beyond the target.

Oscar Tshiebwe led Team Detlef in the championship with eight points. Alondes Williams scored three points, and Emoni Bates added two. Team Detlef shot six-for-15 from the field, compared with Team Jalen's 10-for-15 performance.

The victory gave Jalen Rose a championship in the event coached by former NBA and WNBA stars. Mathurin's MVP award was particularly meaningful because Indianapolis hosted All-Star Weekend and he represented the hometown Pacers.

The tournament also provided an early showcase for several emerging NBA stars, including Wembanyama, Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Banchero, Miller, Scoot Henderson, Brandin Podziemski and Lively.
