Wilt Chamberlain

A look at the career, records and accomplishments of one of the most dominant players in NBA history.

Wilt Chamberlain's NBA Career
Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain was one of the most dominant offensive and rebounding players in the history of the NBA. Few players have ever controlled the statistical record book the way Chamberlain did during the 1960s and early 1970s.

His greatest offensive season came in 1961-62, when he averaged an NBA-record 50.4 points per game. That season included the most famous scoring performance in league history, when Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.

Chamberlain finished his career averaging 30.1 points per game, one of the highest career scoring averages in NBA history. His combination of scoring, rebounding, durability and passing remains unique among centers.

He was also one of the best passing big men the league has ever seen. During the 1967-68 season, Chamberlain recorded 702 assists and led the NBA in total assists. He remains the only center to lead the league in assists. His career statistics include 31,419 points, 23,924 rebounds and 4,643 assists.

Championships and the Celtics Rivalry

Despite Chamberlain's extraordinary individual production, his teams frequently ran into the Boston Celtics dynasty led by Bill Russell.

Boston won eight consecutive NBA championships from 1959 through 1966, repeatedly standing between Chamberlain's teams and the NBA Finals. Chamberlain finally broke through in 1966-67, leading the Philadelphia 76ers past Boston in the Eastern Division Finals and ending the Celtics' eight-year championship streak.

Philadelphia went on to defeat the San Francisco Warriors in the 1967 NBA Finals, giving Chamberlain his first NBA championship .

He won his second title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972. Chamberlain anchored a Lakers team that finished 69-13, won 33 consecutive games and defeated the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.

Teams Wilt Chamberlain Played For

Chamberlain played for three NBA franchises during his career. He began with the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959-60 and remained with the franchise when it moved to San Francisco before the 1962-63 season.

During the 1964-65 season, the Warriors traded Chamberlain to the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers were the former Syracuse Nationals, who had relocated to Philadelphia in 1963.

Chamberlain spent parts of four seasons with Philadelphia and helped the team win the 1967 NBA championship. In 1968 he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played the final five seasons of his NBA career before retiring after the 1972-73 season.

Wilt Chamberlain's 100-Point Game

On March 2, 1962, Chamberlain produced the most famous individual scoring performance in NBA history. Playing for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Chamberlain scored 100 points in a 169-147 victory.

He made 36 field goals and 28 free throws while also collecting 25 rebounds. The game drew an announced crowd of 4,124 and remains the only 100-point performance in NBA history.
