NBA Coaches with Championships and Finals Appearances

NBA Coaching History | Championship Titles | Finals Appearances | Finals Coaching Records

NBA Championship Coaching History

Winning an NBA championship is one of the greatest achievements for a professional basketball head coach. Throughout league history, relatively few coaches have reached the NBA Finals, and an even smaller group has won multiple championships.

Some coaches built dynasties that dominated the league for years. Red Auerbach led the Boston Celtics to nine championships, including eight consecutive titles from 1959 through 1966. Phil Jackson later surpassed Auerbach's record by winning 11 championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.

Other coaches made history by winning titles with different franchises, leading unexpected championship runs or ending decades-long droughts.

This archive examines championship-winning coaches, coaches who reached the NBA Finals, their series records and the franchises they represented.

The records include the Basketball Association of America championships from 1947 through 1949, which are recognized as part of NBA championship history.

NBA Championships Won by Head Coaches

Phil Jackson holds the all-time record with 11 NBA championships as a head coach. Red Auerbach ranks second with nine. Five coaches have won at least five NBA championships.

Historical verification notes: Red Auerbach appeared in 11 Finals from 1957 through 1966 except 1967; his actual appearances were 1957-66, totaling 10, plus 1958 within that span. The original page's total of 11 requires correction to 10. Erik Spoelstra's 2026 entry is unverified and must not be counted in a published through-2025 table. Mike Brown coached Cleveland in the 2007 Finals, but not in the 2016 Finals; Tyronn Lue was Cleveland's head coach in 2016. Those entries should be corrected before publication.
