Shutouts are common in sports such as baseball, hockey and football,
but they are extraordinarily rare in basketball. On October 21, 2003,
the Leslie High School girls basketball team was held scoreless in a
61-0 loss to Olivet High School.
Leslie missed all 24 of its field-goal attempts and
all four free-throw attempts. The Blackhawks entered
the game with an 0-13 record and were averaging approximately
15 points per game. Their highest-scoring game of the season to that
point was 22 points.
Olivet entered the game undefeated at 14-0 and was
ranked third in Michigan Class C. The two teams had already met earlier
that season, with Olivet winning 56-9.
The second meeting produced an even more unusual result. Despite the
large margin, the most remarkable part of the game was not Olivet's
61 points but Leslie's zero. In a sport in which even struggling teams
normally score through field goals or free throws, completing an entire
game without a point made the result a national sports curiosity.
Why a Basketball Shutout Is So Rare
Basketball is designed to produce frequent scoring opportunities.
Possessions change quickly, free throws can produce points without a
made field goal, and even teams having extremely poor shooting nights
normally manage to score several times.
For a team to finish with zero points, it must fail on every field-goal
attempt and every free throw while also avoiding any other scoring
opportunity. Leslie did exactly that against Olivet, missing all
28 of its recorded scoring attempts.
That combination makes a basketball shutout far more unusual than a
shutout in most other major team sports.
The 2003 Leslie Blackhawks
Leslie was already enduring a difficult season when it faced Olivet.
The Blackhawks entered the game 0-13 and averaged only about 15 points
per contest. Olivet, by comparison, was undefeated and one of the
highest-ranked Class C teams in Michigan.
The 61-0 result attracted national attention because a scoreless game
at the high school level was unusual enough to stand out even beyond
Michigan. Contemporary reports emphasized that Leslie had opportunities
to score but simply could not convert any of its 24 shots from the
field or four attempts from the free-throw line.
