Gregg Popovich Becomes the Winningest NBA Coach

Gregg Popovich took over as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs during the 1996-97 season and remained the franchise's head coach through 2024-25. During that span, he transformed the Spurs into one of the most consistent organizations in professional sports.

Popovich passed Don Nelson for the NBA regular-season coaching wins record in March 2022. He finished his head-coaching career with 1,390 regular-season victories, five NBA championships and three NBA Coach of the Year awards.

Jerry Sloan's One-Team Milestone

Before Popovich surpassed him, Jerry Sloan was the standard for long-term coaching success with a single franchise. Sloan won 1,127 regular-season games with the Utah Jazz from 1988 through 2011.

Sloan became the first NBA head coach to reach 1,000 regular-season victories with one franchise and led Utah to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998.

Regular Season vs. Playoff Coaching Wins

This page ranks coaches by regular-season victories only. Playoff wins are tracked separately and are not included in the career totals shown above.

Because playoff success depends on qualifying for the postseason and advancing through multiple rounds, the order of the all-time playoff coaching leaderboard differs considerably from the regular-season victories list.
