LeBron James has climbed to fourth place with
12,016 assists, making him the highest-ranking forward on the NBA's
all-time assists list.

The Evolution of NBA Assists
The assist has been part of official NBA statistical records since the
league's earliest seasons, but the interpretation of an assist has
changed somewhat over time. Modern scorekeeping generally credits an
assist when a pass directly leads to a made basket.
Point guards historically dominated the career leaderboard, with
players such as John Stockton, Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash
setting the standard. More recently, players such as LeBron James,
Nikola Jokic and James Harden have demonstrated that elite playmaking
can come from virtually any position.
