Record: Ron Anderson - 27 Points at Age 26
Ron Anderson scored 27 points for the Cleveland Cavaliers in his
NBA debut on October 26, 1984. Anderson was already 26 years old
when he played his first NBA game.
Most NBA rookies enter the league in their late teens or early 20s,
but that has not always been the case. Some players have reached the
NBA only after spending years playing in college, overseas, in the
minor leagues or in the NBA Development League/G League.
This page looks at players who were at least 26 years old when they
made their NBA debut, with particular attention paid to the
highest-scoring first games.
The term "rookie" on this page refers to a player's first NBA season
and first NBA regular-season appearance. Previous professional
experience outside the NBA does not disqualify a player. This is
important for international veterans such as Dino Radja and Arvydas
Sabonis, who had already established professional careers before
coming to the NBA.

Ron Anderson's 27-Point Debut
Ron Anderson owns the top performance on the
original NBAHoopsOnline list. The 26-year-old forward scored
27 points for the Cleveland Cavaliers in his NBA debut on
October 26, 1984.
Anderson's path to the NBA was unusual compared with most rookies.
He played at Fresno State and was selected by Cleveland with the
27th overall pick in the second round of the 1984 NBA Draft.
Because he was born on October 15, 1958, he had turned 26 less than
two weeks before making his NBA debut.
Unlike many older rookies who had short stays in the league,
Anderson developed into a long-term NBA player. He ultimately
appeared in more than 600 regular-season games during a
10-year NBA career.
Andre Ingram's Remarkable NBA Debut
Few NBA debuts have produced a better story than
Andre Ingram's first game with the Los Angeles
Lakers on April 10, 2018.
Ingram was 32 years old and had spent a decade in the NBA
Development League/G League before finally receiving his first NBA
opportunity. He responded by scoring 19 points against the Houston
Rockets.
Ingram shot 6-for-8 from the field, made four of his five
three-point attempts and went 3-for-3 at the free-throw line.
He also recorded three rebounds, three blocks and one steal.
His 19 points remain one of the most memorable scoring performances
by an older rookie making his first NBA appearance.
Dino Radja
Dino Radja scored 15 points for the Boston Celtics
in his NBA debut on November 5, 1993. He was 26 years old when he
finally arrived in the NBA.
Calling Radja a traditional rookie does not fully describe his
background. Before joining Boston, the Croatian big man had already
spent years playing professional basketball in Europe and had
established himself as one of the continent's top players.
Radja went on to average 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds during his
four NBA seasons with Boston. He was later inducted into the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Other Notable Older Rookie Debuts
Duop Reath - Age 27:
Reath made his NBA debut for Portland against the Los Angeles
Lakers on November 12, 2023. The 27-year-old rookie scored
11 points, grabbed three rebounds and handed out three assists
in only 14 minutes. He made three three-pointers in his first
NBA game.
Reath had already played professionally in Serbia, Australia,
China and Lebanon before reaching the NBA. His path is another
example of why an NBA rookie is not necessarily an inexperienced
professional basketball player.
Arvydas Sabonis - Age 30:
Sabonis was already an international basketball legend when he
finally joined the Portland Trail Blazers in 1995. He made his
NBA debut against the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies on
November 3, 1995.
Sabonis scored 10 points with seven rebounds, three assists and
two steals in 25 minutes. Although technically an NBA rookie,
Sabonis had played professional basketball for many years before
coming to Portland.
Why Some NBA Rookies Are Much Older
The NBA's definition of a rookie is based on NBA experience rather
than a player's total professional basketball experience. This has
produced some unusual rookie seasons throughout league history.
International stars sometimes spent much of their prime playing in
Europe or other professional leagues before joining an NBA team.
Arvydas Sabonis and Dino Radja are two prominent examples.
Other players spent years trying to earn an NBA opportunity.
Andre Ingram's long journey through the NBA Development League and
G League made his 2018 debut particularly unusual.
Modern scouting and the NBA's increasingly international reach have
made it easier for teams to identify players around the world, but
older rookies still occasionally reach the league after lengthy
professional careers elsewhere.
Historical Notes
Highest-scoring debut:
Ron Anderson's 27 points in 1984 remain the highest total among the
players originally tracked by NBAHoopsOnline in this age category.

making his performance especially remarkable because he had spent
roughly a decade in the NBA's developmental league before receiving
his opportunity.
International veterans:
Dino Radja, Arvydas Sabonis and Duop Reath all had significant
professional basketball experience outside the NBA before their
official rookie seasons.
Arvydas Sabonis:
Sabonis was 30 years old when he debuted in 1995. He scored
10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded three assists in

About This Record
This page focuses on players who made their first official NBA
regular-season appearance at age 26 or older. The player's age is
his age on the date of his NBA debut.
Previous experience in international leagues, the NBA Development
League/G League or other professional basketball leagues does not
prevent a player from being considered an NBA rookie if he had not
previously appeared in an NBA regular-season game.
Because early NBA records and the definition of professional
experience have changed considerably over the league's history,
this page focuses on documented NBA regular-season debuts rather
than attempting to compare every pre-NBA professional league.
Have an Update or Missing Player?
Older NBA rookie records can be difficult to track, particularly
for players who spent many years playing professionally outside
the NBA. If you know of a player age 26 or older who should be
added to this list, or spot an incorrect age, date or point total,
please let me know.
When submitting an update, please include the player's name, team,
date of his NBA debut, age and scoring total. A link to a box score
