States and Locations by Their First NBA Game

A chronological look at the first NBA regular-season game played in each U.S. state, Canadian province and selected international city. The list also includes states that have never hosted a regular-season NBA game.

The NBA has played regular-season games far beyond the home cities of its franchises. During the league's early years, neutral-site games were common and helped bring professional basketball to areas without an NBA team.

Later, the league expanded internationally with regular-season games in Canada, Japan, Mexico, England, France and Germany.

About the List

This page tracks the first known NBA regular-season game played in each location. The list includes games played under the Basketball Association of America before the league adopted the NBA name in 1949, because BAA history is recognized as part of official NBA history.

Neutral-site games were much more common during the NBA's early decades. Teams frequently played games in cities and states that did not have permanent franchises, helping the league expand its reach across North America.
