2000 NBA Draft Notes
Kenyon Martin: New Jersey selected Martin first
overall after his standout career at Cincinnati. Martin became an
NBA All-Star and a major part of the Nets teams that reached
consecutive NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.
Mike Miller: Orlando selected Miller fifth overall
out of Florida. He won the 2000-01 NBA Rookie of the Year Award,
later earned Sixth Man of the Year honors and won two NBA
championships with the Miami Heat.
Jamal Crawford: Cleveland selected Crawford eighth
overall out of Michigan and traded his rights to Chicago for the
rights to Chris Mihm. Crawford played 20 NBA seasons and became the
first player to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award three times.
Michael Redd: Milwaukee found the biggest bargain
of the draft at No. 43. The Ohio State guard developed into an
NBA All-Star and one of the league's premier perimeter scorers
during his career with the Bucks.
Three All-Stars: The 2000 draft produced three
eventual NBA All-Stars: Kenyon Martin, Jamaal Magloire and Michael
Redd.
Hedo Türkoğlu: Sacramento selected Türkoğlu 16th
overall from Efes Pilsen in Turkey. He became one of the most
successful international players in the class and later won the
2007-08 NBA Most Improved Player Award with Orlando.
Draft-night movement: Several first-round picks
quickly changed teams. Cleveland selected Jamal Crawford before
trading him to Chicago, Chicago selected Chris Mihm before sending
him to Cleveland, Houston selected Joel Przybilla before his rights
went to Milwaukee, and Milwaukee selected Jason Collier before his
rights went to Houston.
Second-round value: Michael Redd at No. 43 was the
clear standout of the second round, but Eddie House, Eduardo Nájera,
Brian Cardinal and Jason Hart also developed into longtime NBA
players. House and Cardinal later won NBA championships.
High school selections: Darius Miles became the
highest-selected high school player in the draft when the Clippers
took him third overall out of East St. Louis High School. Utah later
selected DeShawn Stevenson at No. 23 directly from Washington Union
High School in California.
International class: The draft included a growing
international presence led by Hedo Türkoğlu, Marko Jarić, Dalibor
Bagarić, Jake Tsakalidis, Primož Brezec, Hanno Möttölä and Igor
Rakočević, reflecting the NBA's rapidly expanding international
talent pool around the turn of the century.
