NBA Rookie Challenge and Rising Stars Participants (1994-2026)
Historical list of players selected for the NBA Rookie Challenge, Rookie-Sophomore Game and Rising Stars competition, including teams, years, MVP awards and participation notes.
Since its debut in 1994, the NBA Rookie Challenge has featured many of the league's most talented young players. Originally designed as an exhibition for first-year NBA players, the event eventually expanded to include sophomores and became known as the Rising Stars Challenge.
Over the years, the competition has included future NBA Most Valuable Players, All-Stars, NBA champions and Hall of Fame players. Early participants included Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson and Steve Nash. Later generations featured LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and numerous other prominent players.
The event has changed formats several times. From 2000 through 2011, rookies competed against second-year players. Drafted teams were introduced in 2012, followed by the USA versus World format in 2015 and a four-team tournament beginning in 2022.

MVP indicates a Rising Stars or Rookie Challenge Most Valuable Player award. DNP indicates a player who was selected but did not participate. Multiple years indicate multiple selections or appearances as recorded in the historical archive.

Understanding the Historical Records
1994-1998: The competition featured rookie players, initially on specially named teams and later in East versus West matchups.
1999: No Rookie Challenge was played because the NBA canceled All-Star Weekend during the lockout-shortened season.
2000-2011: The game matched rookies against sophomores, allowing many players to participate in consecutive seasons.
2012-2014: Former NBA stars selected teams from a pool of rookies and second-year players.
2015-2020: Rising Stars featured Team USA against Team World.
2021: No Rising Stars game was played. Historical roster or selection entries for this year should be distinguished from actual game appearances.
2022-2026: Rising Stars used a four-team tournament, including NBA players and selected G League participants.
Historical Data Notes
Team names reflect the franchises associated with players during their listed seasons. Historical names such as the New Jersey Nets, Seattle SuperSonics and Vancouver Grizzlies are retained where appropriate.
Some players were selected for multiple events, while others were unable to participate because of injuries or other circumstances. A selection should not automatically be counted as an appearance when the archive specifically records that a player did not play.
The archive also includes players associated with the NBA G League during the tournament era. These entries are part of the Rising Stars competition's history and should not be treated as NBA roster appearances unless separately documented.
