2017 NBA Rising Stars Challenge Recap
The 2017 NBA Rising Stars Challenge took place on February 17, 2017, at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, during NBA All-Star Weekend. Team World defeated Team USA 150-141 in the third consecutive edition of the event featuring the league's top young international and American players.
Denver Nuggets rookie Jamal Murray delivered the game's defining performance, scoring 36 points and recording 11 assists to earn Most Valuable Player honors. The Canadian guard made 13 of 19 field-goal attempts, including an extraordinary nine of 14 three-pointers, while committing only three turnovers.
Murray's nine three-pointers tied the Rising Stars single-game record established earlier in the evening by Team USA forward Frank Kaminsky. The two players combined for 69 points and 18 made three-pointers, producing one of the most remarkable long-distance shooting displays in the history of the event.
Murray entered the game as a promising rookie selected seventh overall by Denver in the 2016 NBA Draft. His performance in New Orleans provided an early showcase of the perimeter shooting, scoring instincts and playmaking ability that would later define his career with the Nuggets.
Team World received another outstanding performance from New Orleans Pelicans guard Buddy Hield, who scored 28 points while playing in front of his home crowd. Hield made 11 of 22 field-goal attempts, including three three-pointers, and added six rebounds and three steals.
New York Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis contributed 24 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 11-for-16 from the field. The Latvian big man used his height and mobility to create scoring opportunities near the basket and from the perimeter.
Philadelphia 76ers rookie Dario Saric added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Saric made seven of 10 field-goal attempts, including three three-pointers, giving Team World another efficient offensive option.
Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic scored 12 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and recorded eight assists. Jokic also collected six offensive rebounds and three steals, nearly producing a triple-double in just over 21 minutes.
Utah Jazz guard Dante Exum finished with 11 points and four assists, while Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Domantas Sabonis contributed 10 points. Utah forward Trey Lyles added seven points and two assists.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Abrines scored three points, while New York Knicks center Willy Hernangomez added two points and six rebounds. Abrines and Hernangomez joined the roster as injury replacements.
Team USA was led by Charlotte Hornets forward Frank Kaminsky, who scored 33 points in fewer than 20 minutes. Kaminsky made 12 of 16 field-goal attempts and connected on nine of 13 three-pointers, matching the game's highest three-point total.
Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 24 points and 11 rebounds, making 11 of 14 field-goal attempts. Towns also added three assists and two steals.
San Antonio Spurs guard Jonathon Simmons scored 19 points, making nine of 15 field-goal attempts. Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker contributed 17 points and a team-high six assists.
Los Angeles Lakers guard D'Angelo Russell finished with 12 points, four assists and two steals, while Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner scored 12 points and recorded four rebounds and one blocked shot.
Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor scored 10 points on five-of-six shooting. Phoenix Suns rookie Marquese Chriss added seven points, Los Angeles Lakers rookie Brandon Ingram scored four points, and Milwaukee Bucks rookie Malcolm Brogdon contributed three points and five assists.
Team World controlled the opening half, building a 77-66 advantage through its efficient offense and balanced scoring. The international team attacked the basket and created open three-point opportunities, while Murray and Hield helped maintain a fast tempo.
Team USA improved offensively after halftime, outscoring Team World 75-73 in the second half. Kaminsky's outside shooting and Towns' interior scoring kept the American team competitive, but Team World maintained enough of its early advantage to secure the nine-point victory.
Team World shot 58.9 percent from the field and made 19 of 51 three-point attempts. Team USA was even more accurate overall, shooting 61.9 percent from the field and 40.9 percent from three-point range, but Team World's rebounding and advantage in points scored in the paint proved important.
Team World recorded 50 total rebounds, including seven team rebounds, compared with 39 for Team USA, including three team rebounds. The international squad also scored 84 points in the paint, while Team USA scored 70.
The game featured a remarkable collection of young players who would later establish themselves throughout the NBA. Murray, Jokic, Towns, Booker, Porzingis, Sabonis and others demonstrated the depth of talent entering the league during the mid-2010s.
With Murray's 36-point, 11-assist performance, Kaminsky's nine three-pointers and Jokic's near triple-double, the 2017 Rising Stars Challenge became another memorable chapter in the history of NBA All-Star Weekend.
