2008 NBA Rookie Challenge Recap
The 2008 NBA Rookie Challenge was played on February 15, 2008, at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana, as part of NBA All-Star Weekend. The Sophomores defeated the Rookies 136-109, extending their winning streak in the annual exhibition to six consecutive games. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson delivered a record-setting shooting performance to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
Gibson scored a game-high 33 points, making 11 of his 20 three-point attempts. Remarkably, all 11 of his successful field goals came from beyond the arc. His 11 three-pointers established a Rookie Challenge record and highlighted one of the most memorable outside-shooting performances in the event's history.
Gibson made seven three-pointers during the first half alone, matching the previous single-game record held by Kyle Korver, who had connected on seven three-pointers in the 2005 Rookie Challenge. Gibson then added four more in the second half to establish a new mark.
The Sophomore team featured several players from the highly regarded 2006 NBA Draft class, including Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, Andrea Bargnani, Rajon Rondo, Paul Millsap, Jordan Farmar and Ronnie Brewer. The roster combined exceptional scoring talent with strong playmaking and defensive ability.
Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay contributed 22 points on nine-of-12 shooting, including two three-pointers. Gay also collected three rebounds and two steals. His athleticism and ability to finish around the basket provided an effective complement to Gibson's outside shooting.
Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, including six offensive boards. Aldridge also contributed four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
Brandon Roy, Aldridge's Portland teammate and the 2006-07 NBA Rookie of the Year, finished with 17 points and seven assists. Roy's versatility and ability to create opportunities for teammates were important parts of the Sophomores' offensive success.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar recorded a game-high 12 assists while scoring 17 points and collecting four rebounds and four steals. Farmar made three of his six three-point attempts and helped direct an offense that finished with 38 assists.
Utah Jazz guard Ronnie Brewer delivered an efficient performance, scoring 13 points without missing a field-goal attempt. Brewer made all six of his shots, grabbed three rebounds, distributed four assists and recorded three steals.
Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo contributed six points, six assists and three steals. Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap scored two points and added three rebounds and two assists. Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani finished with eight points.
The Rookie team featured several players who would become major figures in NBA history, led by Seattle SuperSonics forward Kevin Durant. The 2007 second overall draft pick scored a team-high 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists.
Durant was joined by Seattle teammate Jeff Green, who finished with nine points and five rebounds. The appearance came during the SuperSonics' final season in Seattle before the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City.
Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford recorded 19 points on eight-of-10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Horford, the third overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, also contributed two assists and one steal.
New Jersey Nets forward Sean Williams posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Williams made eight of his 11 field-goal attempts and collected four offensive rebounds.
Memphis Grizzlies guard Juan Carlos Navarro scored 14 points, making two three-pointers, and contributed four rebounds and four assists. Toronto Raptors forward Jamario Moon added 13 points, while Milwaukee Bucks forward Yi Jianlian scored eight points.
Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley Jr. finished with two points and a team-high eight assists. Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola added four points and three rebounds.
The Sophomores led 66-52 at halftime and outscored the Rookies 70-57 in the second half. The second-year players made 17 of 32 three-point attempts, shooting 53.1 percent from beyond the arc, and finished with 38 assists.
The Rookies shot an impressive 56.5 percent from the field, but turnovers and the Sophomores' perimeter shooting proved decisive. The Rookies committed 24 turnovers, compared with only nine by the Sophomores.
The game also demonstrated the depth of young talent entering the NBA during this period. Durant would develop into a league MVP and multiple-time NBA champion, while Horford, Conley, Aldridge, Roy, Rondo and Millsap would become important players for their respective franchises.
