1993 NBA All-Star Game Recap
The 43rd NBA All-Star Game took place on February 21, 1993, at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Before a crowd of 19,459, the Western Conference defeated the Eastern Conference 135-132 in overtime. The game became one of the most celebrated moments in Utah Jazz history when hometown stars Karl Malone and John Stockton were named co-Most Valuable Players.
Malone and Stockton had spent years establishing themselves as one of the NBA's most effective combinations. Their partnership was built around Stockton's exceptional passing and Malone's powerful scoring around the basket. With the NBA's biggest stars gathered in their home arena, the two Jazz teammates delivered performances that helped the Western Conference earn a dramatic overtime victory.
Malone led the Western Conference with 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting. He also made six of nine free throws, grabbed 10 rebounds, recorded one steal and blocked two shots in 34 minutes. It was Malone's second NBA All-Star Game MVP award, following his first in 1989.
Stockton scored nine points, collected six rebounds and led all players with 15 assists. He made three of six field goal attempts, including a three-pointer, and converted both free throws. Stockton also recorded two steals in 31 minutes. His passing helped the Western Conference finish with 36 assists on 46 made field goals.
The Western Conference began the game with a narrow 27-26 lead after the first quarter. It increased that advantage during the second period, outscoring the East 30-26 to take a 57-52 lead into halftime.
The Eastern Conference responded after halftime. Led by Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan, Orlando Magic rookie Shaquille O'Neal and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mark Price, the East outscored the West 32-29 in the third quarter. The Western Conference entered the final period with an 86-84 advantage.
The fourth quarter featured a determined Eastern Conference comeback. The East scored 35 points to the West's 33, tying the game at 119-119 at the end of regulation and forcing overtime.
In the extra period, the Western Conference regained control. The West outscored the East 16-13, securing a three-point victory and giving the Salt Lake City crowd an opportunity to celebrate both a Western Conference win and the outstanding performances of its hometown stars.
Jordan led all scorers with 30 points for the Eastern Conference. He made 10 of 24 field goal attempts, including one three-pointer, and converted nine free throws. Jordan also recorded five assists, four rebounds and four steals in 36 minutes.
San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson was another major contributor for the West. Robinson scored 21 points on seven-for-10 shooting, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked one shot. Phoenix Suns guard Dan Majerle added 18 points, making three of six three-point attempts.
Phoenix Suns forward Charles Barkley contributed 16 points, seven assists and four steals. Barkley was making his first All-Star appearance as a Western Conference player after joining Phoenix from the Philadelphia 76ers. He would go on to win the NBA's regular-season MVP award for the 1992-93 season.
Golden State Warriors guard Tim Hardaway also scored 16 points, making nine of 12 free throws. Los Angeles Clippers forward Danny Manning added 10 points on perfect five-for-five shooting.
For the Eastern Conference, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mark Price delivered one of the game's most impressive outside shooting performances. Price scored 19 points and made six of nine three-point attempts. His six three-pointers accounted for most of the East's nine made shots from beyond the arc.
New York Knicks center Patrick Ewing contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Rookie center Shaquille O'Neal scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his first NBA All-Star Game appearance. Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.
The Eastern Conference shot 42.9 percent from the field, making 48 of 112 attempts, while the Western Conference converted 46 of 93 for 49.5 percent. The West also held a 59-55 advantage in rebounds and recorded 36 assists compared with 23 for the East.
Free throws played an important role in the outcome. The Western Conference made 36 of 52 attempts, while the Eastern Conference converted 27 of 42. Although the East made two more field goals and two more three-pointers, the West's nine additional free throws made the difference in the final score.
The 1993 All-Star Game was also significant for several individual milestones. Shaquille O'Neal made his first appearance, Isiah Thomas played in his final All-Star Game, and Michael Jordan appeared in his last All-Star Game before his first retirement later that year.
The event was a showcase for Utah basketball. The Jazz had become regular playoff contenders behind Malone and Stockton, and the Delta Center was one of the NBA's newest arenas. Sharing MVP honors before their home crowd gave the duo one of the defining moments of their partnership.
