Midwest Basketball Conference Championship History

The Midwest Basketball Conference (MBC) operated for two seasons in the mid-1930s and helped establish the foundation for the National Basketball League.

The league crowned two champions. The Chicago Duffy Florals won the inaugural championship in 1936, while the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots captured the second and final MBC championship in 1937.

1936 Championship

Chicago Duffy Florals 39, Indianapolis Kautskys 35

Chicago defeated Indianapolis to win the first Midwest Basketball Conference championship in 1936.

1937 Championship Series

Game 1: Akron Goodyear Wingfoots 28, Fort Wayne General Electrics 22

Game 2: Akron Goodyear Wingfoots 27, Fort Wayne General Electrics 24

Akron swept Fort Wayne two games to none to capture the second and final Midwest Basketball Conference championship.

From the MBC to the NBL

Following the 1936-37 season, the Midwest Basketball Conference was reorganized as the National Basketball League (NBL). Several MBC clubs continued into the new league, including the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots, Indianapolis Kautskys and Fort Wayne General Electrics.

The NBL later became one of the two major leagues involved in the formation of the modern NBA when it merged with the Basketball Association of America in 1949.
