FIBA Basketball World Cup History

A complete history of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, formerly known as the FIBA World Championship, including hosts, champions, runners-up and top-four finishes from 1950 through today.

FIBA Basketball World Cup

The FIBA Basketball World Cup is the premier international basketball tournament for men's national teams. The event was first held in 1950 in Argentina, when the host nation defeated the United States to win the inaugural championship.

The tournament was originally known as the FIBA World Championship. It was renamed the FIBA Basketball World Cup beginning with the 2014 tournament in Spain.

The competition has traditionally been held every four years and has featured many of the strongest basketball nations in the world, including the United States, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Germany.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup was jointly hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. Germany defeated Serbia in the championship game to win its first World Cup title, while Canada finished third and the United States placed fourth.

The next FIBA Basketball World Cup is scheduled for 2027 in Qatar.

World Cup Notes

Argentina won the first tournament in 1950, defeating the United States 64-50 in Buenos Aires. Ten teams competed in the inaugural event.

Brazil became the first country to successfully defend the championship, winning titles in 1959 and 1963.

The United States has won five World Cup championships, while Yugoslavia also accumulated five titles before the dissolution of the country.

Spain won its first championship in 2006 and added a second title in 2019.

Germany became a first-time champion in 2023 after completing an undefeated tournament run.
