NCAA Men's Basketball Champions

A year-by-year history of men's college basketball national champions, including pre-NCAA tournament selections from 1901 through 1938 and official NCAA Tournament champions from 1939 through 2026.

Men's College Basketball Championship History

The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament began in 1939, when Oregon won the inaugural tournament. Championships listed before 1939 come from historical national championship selections rather than the NCAA Tournament itself.

For that reason, this page separates the early pre-tournament era from the official NCAA Tournament championship era while preserving the historical data that was previously listed on NBAHoopsOnline.

NCAA Championship Notes

1939: Oregon won the first NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, defeating Ohio State for the national championship.

1964-1975: UCLA won 10 national championships in a 12-season span, including seven consecutive championships from 1967 through 1973.

1976: Indiana finished 32-0 and remains the most recent NCAA men's basketball champion to complete an undefeated season.

2013: Louisville defeated Michigan in the national championship game, but Louisville's participation in the 2013 NCAA Tournament was later vacated. The NCAA therefore does not count the 2013 title among Louisville's official championships.

2020: The NCAA Tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. No national champion was crowned.

2023-2024: UConn became the first program since Florida in 2006 and 2007 to win consecutive NCAA championships.

2025: Florida defeated Houston 65-63 to win its third NCAA men's basketball championship.

2026: Michigan defeated UConn 69-63 in Indianapolis to win the program's second NCAA men's basketball championship.
