121. Alvan Adams
Few players play 10 or more years with one NBA team, and even fewer play their entire careers with one NBA team. Alvan Adams did just that, spending his entire 13 year NBA career with the Phoenix Suns.
Adams was a flat out star at the University of Oklahoma. In the 73-74 season he set a than school record with 21 double-doubles, the record was since broken by Blake Griffin. He is also one of only three Sooners to score 40 points and grab 20 rebounds; the others being Griffin and Wayman Tisdale.
Upon entering the 1975 NBA draft he was selected 4th overall by the Phoenix Suns. His rookie year was a solid one. He averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and he helped guide the Suns to their first ever NBA finals. The Suns would lose to the Celtics in six games, including the epic game 5 which is considered the greatest game ever played. In that game Adams scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds
Unfortunately for Adam’s his numbers never again quite equaled his rookie season. However, he was a constant double-double threat and one of the games most solid defenders and one of the greatest big man passers to ever play the game.
Adams suffered a knee injury in 83-84 which caused him to miss several games but he never got right after the injury and posted a near career low 10 points a game. The following season he was able to bounce back and have a solid season.
He started to become a role player but a very good one as the Suns rebuild with a younger crowd. Following a disastrous drug scandal in 1986 the Suns where forced to rebuild after they rebuilt and things got progressively worse. Adams hung around for a few more years but finally called it quits in 1988
In 988 career games Adams owns averages of 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. His #33 was retired by the Suns in 1989, but he has allowed current Suns forward Grant Hill to wear the number.
