094. Sam Jones
|
One of the clutchest performers in NBA history and one of the winningest players too. Sam Jones was a ten time NBA champion and one of the greatest Boston Celtics of all-time. Only Bill Russell, 11, has more NBA championship rings as a player.
Jones was a four year starter at North Carolina Central University. The school seen moderate success most years with Jones and Jones put up decent numbers. He played 100 games at NCCU before going pro owning averages of 17 points and 9 rebounds.
The Boston Celtics drafted Jones with the 8th pick of the 1957 NBA draft. The 8th pick may seem low to draft a guy like Jones but there was only 8 teams in the NBA in 1957 so Jones was the last pick of the first round. The 1957 draft was also a fairly week draft with only Hot Rod Hundley (drafted 1st overall by Cincinnati) and Jim Krebs (drafted 3rd overall by Minneapolis) had long careers like Jones.
Jones joined an already established Boston Celtics team, who had previously won the NBA title, so he did not see much action his rookie season only appearing in 56 games and averaging 5 points. He became a more important player his second year and helped Boston win their first of 8 consecutive NBA titles. | |
Jones slowly crept his way into stardom as his averages rose slightly year by year and the Celtics continued to win. In 1961 he was selected to his first all-star game.
As Bill Russell began to age and Bob Cousey retired the scoring burden fell upon Jones and he answered it. In 1965 he averaged a career high 26 points per game and would average 20 or more points for the next four straight seasons.
The Celtics streak of 8 title was ended in 1967 but the Celtics would win two more to bring their total to 11 in 13 seasons. The Celtics dynasty ended in 1969 when Bill Russell and Sam Jones both retired.
Upon his retirement Jones had played in 871 career games with averages of 18 points and 5 rebounds. He was selected to 5 NBA all-star games and in 1984 was selected to the Hall-of-Fame.
