Andy Tonkovich was the first pick of the 1948 BAA draft, which was the second ever BAA draft, and the first number one pick to actually play in the NBA. He was selected by the Providence Steam Rollers who finished the season with the worst record in the BAA at the time.
Tonkovich played his college ball at Marshall University. Tonkovich is one of the older #1 picks being 26 at the time he was drafted, this was because immediately following high school he enlisted in the military to serve during World War II.
Tonkovich made his debut with the Rollers on November 4, 1948 in a game against the Washington Capitols where he scored a career high 11 points. He would played just 17 games in the BAA, all with the Steam Rollers. He would leave the team in December of 1948 and in January of 1949 sign with the Wheeling Blues of the AAL. He would play with the Blues for 3 seasons and even coached them his final season.
