Some of the NBA’s Biggest Ever Flops

Over the years, we’ve seen great champions emerge and world-class operators dominate proceedings on a game-by-game basis in the NBA. Alongside this, though, is an abundance of basketball teams with some poor players who failed to deliver anything significant to the teams they were turning out for. It happens.

The best players understandably hog the limelight, with the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, and Tyrese Haliburton currently standing out and being tipped by many fans who bet on the NBA MVP to win this season’s prize. Alongside the moments of magic these top players produce, though, is a large selection of players who failed to make a positive impression during their NBA careers.

Of course, selecting the worst players in NBA history is ultimately subjective, but there have been some professionals who’ve been hammered more than most. Let’s take a look at just some of them below.

Cherokee Parks

Cherokee Parks came from the esteemed college basketball powerhouse Duke, but he didn’t do their reputation any good. Parks’ move to the NBA was with Dallas before he ended up at the Timberwolves, with the Huntington Beach-born player looking like a fish out of water during his spells with both teams. To be fair to Cherokee Parks, he lasted nine seasons in the league, but he was never going to settle.

Norm Grekin

When Norm Grekin was turning it on for La Salle Explorers on a consistent basis, his stock was understandably high. Teams wanted him. Eventually, after being drafted in 1953, the Philadelphia Warriors were happy to land their big target. Grekin failed to live up to the hype surrounding him, though. In fact, his career in the NBA was a pure disaster. He only managed to feature for one minute in a game, recorded a foul, and then he was never seen again in a Warriors jersey.

Anthony Bennett

After being drafted number one overall in 2013, big things were expected of Anthony Bennett. Everyone associated with the Cleveland Cavaliers was understandably excited when they managed to get their man, only for them to soon realize he wasn’t quite what they’d hoped he’d be. Bennett had ability, and his college highlights prove just how much potential he had, but for whatever reason, we never really saw it in the NBA. An undoubted dud, Anthony Bennett had spells with other teams, such as the Minnesota Timberwolves, but his career ultimately belonged elsewhere. Simply put, he just couldn’t handle the step up to the NBA.

Greg Oden

Understandably, Greg Oden was tipped to be the next big thing when he entered the NBA after producing the goods for Ohio State on numerous occasions. It even led to the Portland Trail Blazers selecting Oden over future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant. It turned out to be a horrible decision in 2007, with Oden going missing in the biggest of moments and failing to build up consistent displays due to persistent knee injuries.

Vincent Poirier

Now playing for Anadolu Efes of the Turkish Basketbol Süper Ligi and the EuroLeague, it just wasn’t meant to be for Vincent Poirier. The Frenchman has ability and it has enabled him to have a decent career outside of America, but he struggled to compete with the NBA’s finest. For both Boston and Philadelphia, Poirier never really got going and, if truth be told, he looked out of his depth whenever he did make an appearance.

Other players who flopped in the NBA include Adam Morrison, Javaris Crittenton, Rafael Araújo, Mengke Bateer, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Sun Yue, Michael Ruffin, Hasheem Thabeet, DeSagana Diop, Bismack Biyombo, Lazar Hayward, and Mark Madsen.
