Which NBA team will sign Giannis Antetokounmpo?
The 2019-20 NBA season has had a lot of talking points and most were not about the basketball on the hardwood. The COVID-19 pandemic and the politically charged protests by players have taken most of the headlines. However, there have been plenty of basketball-related stories buddling under the surface. Arguably the most significant basketball storyline concerns Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and where he will play after his contract in Cream City ends. The Bucks are hurtling toward the NBA Finals in the hope of winning at title. Can the Bucks win the Finals or will another team grab the Larry O'Brien Trophy? Antetokounmpo is in the penultimate year of his Milwaukee Bucks contract. The Greek Freak signed his current $100 million deal prior to the 2017-18 campaign and will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2021. It is believed that when Antetokounmpo hits the free agent marketplace, he will be the most sought-after player in NBA history. It will lead him to be the highest-paid player in the Association's history.
The Greek Freak has nearly single-handedly turned the Milwaukee Bucks into a top NBA title contender. The Bucks have been the cream of the crop in the Eastern Conference over the last two seasons with a team built around Antetokounmpo. If he departs Cream City, it will be a huge loss for the team and a major step backwards down the conference standings is likely to occur.
NBA analysts continue to make claims over which team Antetokounmpo will join. According to outspoken and often mis-informed radio sports pundit Colin Cowherd, Antetokounmpo will join the Golden State Warriors. It would allow him to unite with star guard Steph Curry and fill in the role that Kevin Durant left open when he joined the Brooklyn Nets.
Analyst Brian Scalabrine has also made a bold claim about the Greek Freak. According to Scalabrine, Antetokounmpo could join the Dallas Mavericks. It would allow him to hook up with promising stars Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. Mavericks' owner Mark Cuba's deep pockets could help lure Antetokounmpo to Texas. Miami and Los Angeles - Clippers and Lakers - are also in the mix while the Toronto Raptors have been whispered about.
What do the Bucks do?
The Bucks are likely to hang onto Antetokounmpo in 2020-21 allowing him to walk away for free at the end of his contract. There is still hope he will stay in Cream City and solidify his reputation as a Bucks legend. However, in modern NBA where money isn't always the reason for stars to move teams, Antetokounmpo could leave simply to play with another big-named basketball player like Curry or Doncic.
Milwaukee is on the verge of losing in the playoffs without reaching the NBA Finals once more. It would be the second straight season of being the NBA Eastern Conference's best regular season team but getting knocked out of the playoffs early. The Bucks could cash-in on Antetokounmpo in the shortened NBA offseason allowing a team to have one year with him in the starting five. It would be similar to what the Toronto Raptors did with Kawhi Leonard. It could certainly be worth it. However, it would most likely be worth more for the Bucks to keep Antetokounmpo and lose him in 2021.
