On October 13th the team had a name the team contest, offering two season tickets and $100 to the winner. The team's name was not announced until the first game.

The Skyhawks played their first game on October 30, 1947, vs the New Orleans Hurricanes. The Skyhawks won 51-42. This game was also the first known instance of glass backboards being used in a basketball game.

Just 13 days later on November 12th, the PBLA announced that the league has folded. The following day the Skyhawks announce that they will play 2 more games, and a home-and-home series with the Atlanta Crackers, and possibly more if there is enough interest. The series never takes place and players begin to leave the PBLA and sign with the NBL and BAA.
