107 Tom Chambers
 |
Sometimes players are remembered for one thing in their career, Tom Chambers is remembered for one all-star game in 1987 where he scored 34 points in front of his hometown crowd of Seattle to win the all-star MVP. Yet Chambers had a long and very good career in the NBA.
Chambers attended the University of Utah where he became a 4 year starter and one of the schools best players. In his senior season Chambers averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds. He finished his four year career at Utah with averages of 15 points and 8 rebounds.
The San Diego Clippers used the 8th pick in the 1981 draft to select Chambers. The Clippers were an injury riddled team who seen little success but Chambers did manage to average 17 points a game his rookie season. Chambers had a solid second year as well but the team added Terry Cummings who won Rookie of the year that year which made Chambers expendable, especially after the team added Bill Walton. |
Chambers was traded to the Seattle Supersonics in the off-season and he would be come a star with the Sonics and is most remembered for being a Sonics player. With the Sonics Chambers numbered jumped to near 20 points his first year than over 20 for most the rest of his tenure with the Sonics including 23 points a game in 1987. Chambers first made the all-star team in 1987 where he scored 34 points and won MVP.
In 1988 Chambers left the Sonics and signed with the Phoenix Suns. His decision to leave Seattle and how he did it would become one of the most controversial off-season free agent signings ever, really only trumped by the 2010 Lebron James decision. Chambers and his agent had the Sonics believing that they were going to sign him, only to also be talking to the Utah Jazz. The Jazz believed they had came to terms with Chambers only to basically turn on the TV the next morning and see that Chambers had signed with the Phoenix Suns.
Chambers first two years with the Suns saw his scoring numbers sky rocket. He averaged 26 points in 1989 and 27 in 1990 and he made the all-star team both years. His scoring began to dip after he got over 30 years old and fell to 20 in 1991. The Suns began to add talent to make a finals run and the talent they added took away from Chambers scoring opportunities. When the Suns added Charles Barkley in 1992 Chambers seen his minutes and scoring chances diminish. He did not start a game in 92-93 but the Suns did go onto lose in the NBA finals to the Chicago Bulls.
Following the season Chambers signed with the Utah Jazz where he would once again be a back up to a top power forward in the NBA-Karl Malone. Chambers first year in Utah was a solid one where he finished with an 11 points per game average, but his second year he seen very little action and his minutes fell to 15 a game.
After Utah Chambers tried to stay in the league but could not find a place to play. He could not find anywhere in the NBA to play so he went and played a season in Israel. After one season in Israel he returned to the NBA for a short stint with the Charlotte Hornets. In 1997 he re-signed with the Suns but never played a game for them and was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He played one game for the Sixers before retiring.
In 1,107 career games Chambers has career averages of 18 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists and was a 4 time all-star. He currently runs the shooting stars ranch in North Ogden, Utah.
