049. Dave Bing

An early star who flat out kept the Detroit Pistons competitive. Dave Bing was a scoring machine in his early days and helped the Pistons reach the playoffs a few times, though one of the knocks against his career is that the Pistons struggled when he played his best ball.

Bing played three years at Syracuse University where he put up respectable numbers for his era. He averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds in 76 career games for the Orangemen. His senior year he averaged 28 and 11 and helped Syracuse make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

The Detroit Pistons selected Bing with the second overall pick in the 1966 draft. Bing had a great rookie year averaging 20 points a game and winning rookie of the year. His best year statistically came his second season when he averaged 27 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds and made his first all-star appearance. He also helped the Piston make the playoffs.

Bing was a bit of an inconsistent scorer through-out his career, not in consistent in that he got 30 points one night and 5 the next, but he was a player who would put up 25-28 points nightly one season, than 20-22 the next than back to the 25 point range. After his 27 points per game average in 1968 his points fell to 23 in 69 and 70 than back to 27 in 71.

Bing was a constant all-star who made the midseason classic six times with the Pistons and 7 times overall. He was not only a good scorer but had good assists numbers as well. He averaged over 6 assists per game 8 times in his career.

After nine years with the Pistons he was traded to the Washington Bullets for Kevin Porter. He seen some limited success with the Bullets making one all-star as a member of the year and being a member of a couple of deep playoff runs, but age began to show on Bing and just prior to the 77-78 season he was released by the Bullets.

The Boston Celtics added Bing for what would be his last season in the NBA. He averaged 14 points per game on a pretty bad Celtics team and than called it a career. Bing appeared in 901 career games averaging 20 points per game and was inducted to the hall of fame in 1990.
