The Robin to Larry Bird’s Batman, Kevin McHale was the consummate team player sacrificing for his team. He could have gone to nearly any other team in the NBA and became a 30 points per night scorer, instead he often opted to stay with the Celtics and come off the bench and win championships.
McHale attended the University of Minnesota where he played all four years of eligibility. His junior season was his best season where he averaged 18 points and 10 boards. In total he played in 112 games for the Golden Gophers averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds.
The Boston Celtics drafted McHale with the 3rd overall pick in the 1980 NBA draft. McHale would go on to have a sold rookie season averaging 10 points, 4 rebounds and nearly 2 blocks a game. He was also key to Boston’s first title run in the 1980s with Larry Bird at the helm.
McHale quickly became known as one of the best sixth men in the NBA, and when the award for sixth man was created in 1983 McHale came in second to Philadelphia’s Bobby Jones. McHale would than win the award the next two years, as well as help Boston win another NBA title.

Despite being a bench player McHale made the all-star team with regularity, first making the squad in 1984. He finally got the chance to become a full time starter 1985-86 and the Celtics went on to win another title. This would be their last title for some 22 years, the longest drought in Celtics history.
In 86-87 McHale averaged a career high 26 points and 10 rebounds a game With Larry Bird suffering from back injuries and Robert Parrish getting older McHale emerged as the Celtics new go to guy. He averaged 20 or more points each season from 1985 until 1990.
In 1990 the Celtics started to rebuild and McHale was moved back to the bench. He stayed there the remainder of his career and retired after the 1993 season.
McHale appeared in 971 career games for the Celtics but only started 400, yet managed to average 18 points and 8 rebounds. He was induced into the hall of fame in 1999.
