41. Jason Kidd

One of the greatest point guards to play, yet also quickly becoming one of the most unheralded. Jason Kidd has had a long and very prolific career which has seen him become somewhat of a veteran statesman in the modern NBA.

Kidd attended the University of California for only two years but quickly became one of the greatest players in school history. He set many records for assists and steal. In two seasons at Cal he played in 59 career games and averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.

The Dallas Mavericks drafted Kidd with the second overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft. Kidd had a great year statistically for the Mavs averaging 12 points 8 assists and 5 rebounds per game en route to winning rookie of the year honors. Kidd followed it up with another all around season in 95-96 and made his first all-star team.

Though Kidd was on the fast track to stardom the Mavericks sucked and there where a lot of personal issues between Kidd and fellow stars Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson. All three would eventually get traded for the building blocks which would set the Mavs up in the 2000s. The Mavs traded Kidd to the Phoenix Suns partway through the 1996-97 NBA season.

In Phoenix Kidd would find some modest success which escaped him in Dallas. The Suns would make the playoffs with regularity and Kidd would lead the NBA twice in assists.

Kidd played four and a half seasons with the Suns before he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Kidds best years are arguably with the Nets, what is not arguable however is that Kidd seen his greatest success as a member of the Nets.

In his first year with the Nets Kidd once again lead the NBA in assists and helped make one of the leagues biggest joke franchises into a contender. The Nets made the NBA finals twice losing both times but those two years are really the apex of Nets history.

The Nets continued to be good with Kidd as point guard and made the playoffs a franchise record six consecutive seasons. But with age becoming a factor the Nets traded Kidd back to where he began his career; Dallas.

Kidd’s had a rocky reunion with the Mavs in Big D. The team struggled when he first arrived and has never got close to a title. Kidd now has become more of a role player on the Mavs than a star.

Kidd is still under contract with the Mavs for the 2010-11 season and thus far in his career has played in 1,187 career games and owns averages of 14 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists.
