Las Vegas Day 8
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3| Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 |
Another scorcher here in the desert. The thermostat on at the Bellagio said it was 121. But I endured the heat even though I have complained about it a lot recent. Today seemed kind of dead compared to other days. Not as much excitement from people, and the play today was better but a lot less enthusiastic.
The first game on the day was the Knicks and Pistons. The game was pretty much dictated by the play of each teams stars. Greg Monroe especially set the pace for the Pistons and they played through him all game long. The Knicks tried to run a lot and were really successful at it.
The game was fairly close through the first half before the Knicks opened it up. Detroit had a real turnover problem and Tony Douglas really frustrated Terrico White. This to me is why the Knicks won.
Greg Monroe dominated this game. The Pistons lost but he was a beast. He ended with 27 and 14 but did have 6 turnovers. I really liked what I saw from him today. He was not hesitant like he has been in the past and set out to do what he needed to do. I also thought the Pistons did a much better job of getting him the ball.
DeJuan Summers had a bad night. Missed some easy shots but he did actually work hard on defense. He isn’t a great defender but understood he had to do something to be effective in the game so in that regard he was successful.
Elijah Millsap is a very good rebounded for someone his size, now I doubt that translates well into the NBA but he could make it.
Landry Fields continues to impress. He has been one of my favorite players to watch this summer league. I actually think he can become a great sixth man for the Knicks this season.
Bill Walker finally played well. He has been bad in this summer league and today looked confident and was able to get some shots to fall. He did become a little too confident and took some bad shots but all in all played very well.
Statistically Tony Douglas didn’t have a great game but he was very effective in disrupting the Pistons offense and getting into passing lanes.
The Raptors and Kings game was an annoying game to watch. The refs where whistle happy and the constant fouls and free throws disrupted any offensive continuity.
The Raptors jumped up early and never really relinquished their lead though the Kings did make a comeback a few times. I thought both coaches where more concerned about show casing their stars than actually winning the game.
Sunny Weems took a lot of bad shots and was careless with the ball but wasn’t too bad. The turnovers where mostly stupid and would definitely not have been called against a more recognized player. Struggles defensively sometimes and is too quick to shoot. If he settled down and set himself his shots would be better.
Demar DeRozen continues to look like a star in the making. He’s got some great athleticism and can really dunk. He is great at making contact than getting a shot up, unfortunately he wasn’t able to hit many of those or he’d have had about 40 points. He was able to get to the foul line a lot.
Ed Davis had a very effective game. He had some great blocks and didn’t do anything bad. He just had a very good solid game which you cannot complain about.
DeMarcus Cousins had a bad game, but yet it was not terrible. He had a hard time getting into any offensive rhythm but was able to still score points even though he took a ton of terrible shots. He was able to get a lot of rebounds and block shots. He needs to learn not to challenge everything because he got about 7 fouls which a veteran would not have gotten.
Donte Green tried his best and had a good game but needs to learn to finish better.
The last game I watched was the best. It was between Washington and New Orleans. This game was closely contested and had a spectacular finish.
Washington had a terrible second quarter, but than New Orleans had a terrible third quarter. Fouls where annoying once again, but turnovers were not a big problem from anyone outside of Maurice Ager.
Washington has a great core of young guys and hit the gold mine with Wall. The Wizards won on a buzzer beater by Lester Hudson.
Javale McGee dominated down low. He scored at will and abused opposing bigs. Could have played defensive a little bit better but offensively had one of the great games I have seen in summer league.
John Wall may have actually outdone McGee though. Wall had 31 to McGee’s 29. Wall does need to learn to finish amongst bigger players better but was flat out dominate. When the Wizards struggled in the second quarter it was because Wall was out.
Other than turnovers Maurice Ager had a great game. This was the best shot selection I have ever seen from him and he got to the line a lot.
Kyle Hines was a monster on the boards. Kind of surprised me but he was good.
