Las Vegas Day 7
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3| Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 |
Another completely Hellish day here in Las Vegas. The buzz around town is that the Hornets might be moving to Sin City. Apparently some people think that the Hornets are nearing completing a deal to play at the Thomas and Mack until a new stadium is built somewhere on the strip. Just some interesting news I thought people would like to hear. Now onto the games.
The first game was between the Spurs and Lakers. The Lakers had been pretty bad as a team though have had some great individual effort by players in the summer league and nothing changed today. The game was pretty close through out though the Spurs did pull away late.
The game was pretty fluid and didn’t have many stoppages due to fouls and turnovers. The Spurs tried to run a lot though.
Gerald Green is still pretty much the same Gerald Green we have seen for year. Very athletic and can do some of the most amazing dunks in the world but cannot shoot a lick. He missed several threes and got so bad from outside the Spurs weren’t even guarding him. Still, though, he had a decent showing.
I still like Devin Ebanks and think he’s going to be a steal for the Lakers. A very crafty guy who has a lot of moves.
Derrick Caracter is another player I like for the Lakers. He didn’t have as good of game as he has had in the past but he was still solid and his defense did improve.
Gary Neal was spectacular for the Spurs. Deadly from outside but can drive and dish as well. A little bit smallish though.
Tyler Wilkerson had a good game too. Doesn’t have the NBA body but he really tried hard.
The Suns and Warriors played a really great game that was closer than the score indicated. Both teams really fought hard and it was a fairly clean game from both sides. The Suns team should be better than it was but they just didn’t mesh very well.
The Warriors have been fun to watch this year because they press the ball a lot and always want to play fast. They do tend to take a lot of bad shots and tonight was no exception. The Warriors were able to pull away tonight mainly because they didn’t take those bad shots in the last 5 minutes of the game.
Kim Tillie continues to impress. He is small but can rebound really well and has some nice moves under the basket. Still needs help with his defense though.
Brian Chase was amazing at times. He is incredibly quick and has great court vision. Really tiny though and cannot see over bigger point guards.
For once Reggie Williams did not shoot to much and instead let the game come to him and had what I thought was his best showing this summer. He’s actually a pretty decent spot up shooter too.
Earl Clark finally had a nice game, but he is still raw and I still don’t see what’s so great about him. He’s really no different from any of these other summer leaguers out there except he was a lottery pick.
Scottie Reynolds was one of my favorite player in college and he has been terrible. I think his game just doesn’t translate into the NBA game.
The last game I caught was between the Mavs and Wizards. I wanted to see how John Wall stood up against someone who seen real minutes in the NBA last year in Roddy Beaubois, and Wall did just fine and actually dominated poor Roddy. The Mavs had a hard time doing anything in the first quarter because Wall abused Beaubois so bad and did whatever he wanted to do.
The Mavs slowly came back but it was too much John Wall.
John Wall is the real deal. Future all-star and probably rookie of the year. He is like watching Chris Paul. He is working on his turnovers and his vision and can just flat out dominate.
Cartier Martin was fantastic too. Excellent three point shooter and really good defender. I noticed a lot of the scouts were really taking notice of him too.
Javale McGee was a monster. If the Wizards are going to play a fast pace game he is going to have to be their guy at the 5. He can block shots and get outlet passes to the ball handlers really fast. He’s very strong under the basket too and goes straight up with power to dunk too.
Jeremy Lin was the Mavs salvation and really surprised me a lot. I hadn’t paid attention to him much but he ran the offense fantastically. Has great court vision and is a very good ball handler.
Ian Mahinmi is going to be a huge mistake by Dallas. He is a flat out terrible defender and lost on offense. Has poor hands too.
Dominique Jones continues to look to be a steal for the Mavs. He really had a good game tonight and was able to draw fouls and play great defense. I am really excited to see him play this season.
