Las Vegas Day 3

Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3| Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 |Day 7 | Day 8 |

First up was the Knicks and Nuggets. I was excited to see the Knicks because they had not yet played, this was Denver’s third game. This game was really fluid and resembled an NBA game even though the Knicks did struggle a lot.

Denver got up big early and the Knicks never were in this game. Ironically though that for a game that was this fluid there were a lot of turnovers. But for New York’s part they forced a lot of Denvers turnovers. Denver shot lights out and got a lot of easy baskets.

New York did make a come back late in the game but it was too little too late for them. The biggest complain I have from this game is free throws. Denver took 50 of them and New York’s defense was atrocious.

Bill Walker had a terrible game. He was either taking bad shots, turning the ball over or committing a foul I think he had 10 turnovers and 10 fouls to go with his 14 points and make a very odd triple-double.

Tony Douglas was great for the Knicks. Like the rest of the point guard crop from 09 he has very good court awareness and can make difficult passes. He needs to work on his shot selection though as he took way too many ill-advised shots.

Every single Knicks player who played today needs to work on their defense. They defense both individually and as a team was pathetic. Andy Rautins was especially bad. He tried but he just wasn’t able to keep up with the quicker guys for the Nuggets. Sorry to say but he will not make the Knicks roster this fall because his defense is that bad.

Ty Lawson had another spectacular game. Whatever what bothering him day one seems to have subsided and now he has his mind focused on dominating this league. Honestly, he should just call it a summer because he isn’t going to be helped very much by this summer league because he’s playing inferior talent and will just simply destroy these guys.

Colby Karl found his groove again. Made some nice open shots and was really impressive moving without the ball.

The second game was another blow out. Portland just smashed Houston and it wasn’t even entertaining. Houston was bad, really bad. A lot was made because Houston was on some kind of summer league streak for wins, like that matters, but a lot of people where talking about it. Well that ended tonight.

Portland jumped up early and just glided to an easy win as Houston had a difficult time making shots. Houston did hang around for a while in the first quarter and cut Portlands lead to six but it wasn’t much of anything, mostly caused by careless Portland turnovers.

Patrick Mill really showed his stuff today, had the game been closer and he gotten more minutes he would have had a triple double. He’s a very good passer and a good rebounded for someone who is probably shorter than I am. He was listed as 6 foot in the media reports but he looks closer to 5’7”. Still I was very impressed and he is a freakish athlete.

Luke Babbitt took some time to get things going. At first he played pretty bad but got better as the game progressed. Like most Blazers players he is hard to get a feel for because they didn’t get a lot of minutes.

Chase Budinger is the one bright spot for the Rockets. He played very well but took some bad shots trying to get his team back into the game. He doesn’t appear to be a dominating type of player but rather is best suited to let the game come to him.

Jordan Hill had a decent showing. Still needs to work on boxing out even though he did grab 9 rebounds.

Patrick Patterson was awful. Missed a lot of shots early and never got involved in the offense again and his poor showing offensively effected him on the defensive end as well.

Finally a game that was close and a game a lot of people really got interested it. It was John Wall’s NBA debut and he had a very good showing. This game was entertaining and hard fought because both teams wanted to win.

The teams fought back and fourth for most the game, until about the 3 minute mark in the third when Washington built up a small lead and never gave it up.

John Wall lived up to his billing as a number one pick. He was very impressive but needs to work on his turnovers, mainly due to lack of court vision. He is very good at getting to the line though, and takes smart shots.

Javale McGee had a better game than Wall did for the Wizards. If there was a rebound to be had it was going to be McGee who grabbed it. Very good in the paint and very strong.

Reggie Williams is still shooting like crazy, only tonight he made them. He had 34 points but is the definition of a volume shooter. He just shoots and shoots and shoots some more. Honestly I don’t see how many teams are really going to be interested in him because he doesn’t play within a team dynamic. He’s selfish and not very creative.

I continued to be impressed by Kim Tillie. He’s a very solid player who could be a solid role player on a NBA team. Still needs to work on his fouling though, he’s averaging about 8.5 fouls a game in the summer league in about 25 minutes.

The final game between the Heat and Hornets was another very good game with a great finish. The teams teetered with their leads and both gave up 7-8 point leads early. This game was sloppy at times with a lot of dumb fouls and poor play. I thought the ball handlers for both teams did a poor job getting their teams into their offenses and Miami was simply isolation plays the entire game. I seen in the box score that they only had 5 assists as a team.

New Orleans built an 8 point lead after a great third quarter but Miami came back in the 4th. John Scheyer of Duke fame hit a big shot in the closing seconds to secure a win for the Heat.

Shavik Randolph has some great athleticism but nothing too special. He’s like a poor man’s Chris Anderson. He has NBA experience with Miami and Philadelphia but he just did not impress me all that much.

Kenny Hasbrouck had a great game and has a nice shot. Way too selfish though, he looked for his shot first and that was it. He could actually be back with the Heat since they will need to sign cheap players but his stinginess could be a problem.

John Scheyer needs a system to be effective. He had a good game but was left out of the offense. He had 3 of Miami’s 5 assists and was unguarded a lot of the time because Miami simply wouldn’t pass him the ball.

I thought a lot of guys for Miami tried to hard to impress the Heat because of the open roster spots. There was no team play and it was me ball all the way. Yeah some of these guys where impressive but detrimental to their team.

No one really impressed me with the Hornets though. They played more as a team and no one was hogging the ball constantly. Quincy Pondexter really struggled tonight. He looked slightly out of shape and pointed to his knee a lot.

Marcus Thornton should have been more aggressive. When he got aggressive the Hornets did well when he slacked off is when they struggled.
