Las Vegas Day 2
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3| Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 |Day 7 | Day 8 |
The first game of the night was between Toronto and Phoenix and was about as boring of a game as you can get; even for summer league. The Raptors jumped out quick and fast and never looked back and the Suns were just there. It was like 5 on 5 drills where the defenders do not try to play defense.
I thought the officiating was really tight in this game too, it seemed like every 5 seconds there was a foul. I seen on the box score sheets they handed out during every quarter that the Raptors actually had more free throw attempts than field goal attempts.
I really liked what I seen from Joey Dorsey. He controlled the paint and grabbed every board that came his way. Not much on offense but could be a defensive specialist in the NBA.
Sonny Weems looked to score every time he had the ball. Not a bad scorer but a little too greedy for my taste. He passed up a lot of open teammates.
Ed Davis did really good as well. A bit small and need to get bigger but he knows what he is doing and goes out and does what he needs to.
Soloman Alabi might be a steal for the Raptors, stupid Mavericks for trading him. He has an NBA body and a nose for the ball.
Blake Griffins brother Taylor is a terrible player. Slow, can’t box out and never met a three point shot he didn’t like and he cannot make them.
Gani Lawl had the best game for the Suns but really wasn’t all that impressive. He scored mainly because somebody had too. Didn’t work hard to get boards and kind of gave up midway through the game.
Earl Clark did better than last night but again he played matador defense. Didn’t even try to wrap guys up or nothing, just let them go.
The second game between the Lakers and Nuggets was a better game than the first but was one of those games which slowly gets out of hand for a team. Denver has some really good talent and they fit together better than the Lakers do.
Denver slowly built a double figure lead over the first two quarters and the Lakers just couldn’t cut into it and Denver won all 4 quarters by slim margins but it added up to a 20 point win.
Devin Ebanks had another very good game. On draft night I heard comparisons between him and Trevor Ariza and watching him I can see them; except Ebanks might be a better scorer. He has a nice shot and good shot selection.
Derrick Caracter had another good game, probably better than his last game as he didn’t play defense with his hands as much. Very good rebounded though.
Ibraham Jabaar had a terrible game and was eaten up by Lawson. He doesn’t have the speed to keep up with quicker guards.
Colby Karl had a bad game too. Shot the ball poorly and got frustrated. He didn’t do well with the pressure the Lakers gave him either.
Ty Lawson had a much better showing today as well. He really controlled the game and looked like he did during the regular season. Made some good crisp clean passes and didn’t turn the ball over.
Shane Edwards had a quiet but efficient night for the Nuggets. He doesn’t do anything great but does a lot of things good.
Another blowout in game 3. This game started very ugly and was quit boring but than picked up in the late second and the Pistons went crazy in the third. The Warriors team looked really bad and at times it looked like guys where just out there to get theirs. The Pistons starting five made up entirely of Pistons roster players played very well.
The third quarter is really the difference maker as the Warriors flat out sucked and the Pistons looked very good. The Pistons scored about 40 points in that quarter to make it a blowout. I really liked the intensity they brought in the second half and that was the game changer.
DeJaun Summers had a very nice outing. He took better shots, played better defense and let the game come to him instead of trying to dictate to the game. I liked his shot selection today, but has to work on his defense.
Greg Monroe had a nice day as well. He should have had a double-double and I think the shorted him a few rebounds. He has an NBA body and is very good around the basket.
Austin Daye again was good but needs to work on his shot selection. He took several really bad shots today.
Elijah Millsap played some great defense. Very good at reading passing lanes and not a stingy player at all. A little small though and tries to play bigger than he is which is okay in summer league but wont work in the regular NBA.
Brandan Wright was very mediocre today. He took a few plays off and never really got any sort of rhythm to the game. Didn’t play a lot either.
Reggie Williams was shoot, shoot , shoot and it didn’t matter he just shot and missed. He got to the line a lot but his shot selection was terrible.
Brian Chase controlled the tempo for the Warriors really well but tried to score too often which lead to trouble for the Warriors. He’s a small quick guard who has the court vision of a NBA veteran but lacks the abilities of a true NBA player.
Kim Tillie surprised the heck out of me. First because I had no idea who he is, he just appeared on the team, and second because he was actually pretty good. He has very nice low post moves and can hit a step out jumper. He is a bit small though and will need to put on weight if he’s ever going to play in the NBA as bigger guys abuse him.
Finally I got to see my Mavericks play in the last game vs. Houston. Unfortunately for me the Rockets where better than my Mavs. Rodrique Beaubois was spectacular though and single handedly kept the Mavs in the game.
This was one of the cleaner games I have seen played in the summer league ever. Neither team turned the ball over much and most the passes and plays where run to near perfection. Neither team shot the ball well from outside though.
Like I said Roddy Beaubois was awesome. Took great shots, ran the offense great and found open people. I was really happy with what I saw from him.
Dominique Jones started off the game fantastic, than vanished. He had like 10 points in the first quarter and didn’t score again. He needs to assert himself in the game more.
Omar Samhan played very well for the Mavs though. I was suspicious of him after last nights game but he was much more in tune tonight. Good body control and a smart player.
JR Giddens was terrible again. Not sure what to say about him other than he was bad.
Chase Budinger cannot find his shot. Even in warm ups he was clanking them off the rim. He did play some nice defense and grab some boards. Ugliest hair in the NBA though.
Patrick Patterson could not follow up his good game from last night. He did alright on the boards but struggled to get into the offense and Samham really bothered him defensively.
Jermaine Taylor was impressive once again. He’s really quick and has a full compliment of skills. Can pass, rebound, shoot, and defend. He probably could have had 30-40 points if he had been more aggressive.
Jordan Hill was decent. Nothing spectacular, just a solid outing from him. Does need to get more assertive though, and doesn’t like contact in the paint.
