Ranking the Four Possible 2022 NBA Finals Matchups|
The 2022 Eastern and Western Conference Finals combatants and NBA Vegas odds are set, with the Celtics taking on the Heat while the Warriors and Mavericks also get set to tangle. Dallas' upset of #1 seed Phoenix threw a wrench in what could have been an exciting Suns vs. Golden State matchup, but there are still no shortage of storylines heading into the final few games of the NBA season.
NBA and television executives have to still like these final couple pairings to determine the Eastern and Western Conference Champions. Some matchups for the 2022 NBA Finals crown would be better than others, so let's rank the four possible scenarios moving forward:
#4 Mavericks vs. Heat
Make no mistake there are worse NBA Finals showdowns between Jimmy Butler and Luka Doncic, and these are two teams who have passionate fan bases due to recent success. This would be a rematch of the 2011 NBA Finals that Dallas won 4-2 and that Game 6 matchup drew 23.8 million viewers – 11 million more than the Bucks closing out the Suns in Game 6 in 2021.
A Mavericks vs. Heat NBA Finals matchup would be very top-heavy in terms of star power, but aside from Doncic and Butler there aren't a lot of interesting characters on either team. Tyler Herro and Jalen Brunson are nice secondary players, but people aren't tuning in to see them at this point in their careers.
#3 Mavericks vs. Celtics
Once again you'd have Doncic who is proving to be arguably one of the top two or three players in the league. The real draw in this potential matchup would be the Celtics though with their rabid fanbase that is eager for their first title since 2008. Having collected 17 world championships already apparently isn't enough for Boston fans.
#2 Heat vs. Warriors
Some people may be sick of Golden State's success by now, but there's no denying they are still a huge draw. Plus there are others who would love to see the Warriors return to the spotlight as they appeared in five straight Finals before missing out on the postseason altogether the last two years.
Golden State vs. Miami would be a well coached series with two experienced men at the helm. Steve Kerr has taken the Warriors to five Finals, winning three while Erik Spoelstra has guided the Heat to five trips to the Finals winning two of them. This matchup would probably be the best from a pure basketball perspective.
#1 Celtics vs. Warriors
The 2022 NBA Finals meeting that a majority of fans and NBA / TV personnel would love to see is Boston vs. Golden State. The Celtics are the most dominant franchise of the 60's and early 80s while the Warriors have owned the 2010s. Plus talk about star power in this matchup from Steph Curry to Jayson Tatum to Klay Thompson to Jaylen Brown. We'd also have two of the more passionate players in the NBA sharing the court with Golden State's Draymond Green and Boston's Marcus Smart. This is the matchup that would be must see TV.
